Airlie Conference Center
The Airlie Conference Center, commonly referred to simply as Airlie, is a historic hotel outside of Warrenton, Virginia. The compound is best known for having become a safe space for dialogue during the US civil rights movement, and as the origin of Earth Day. History Original estate 1899-1958 In the 1890s, socialite Harry Connelly Groom moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Fauquier County, Virginia. There he purchased land to build a manor from Adeline h. Edmonds. Groom named the estate the "Airlie House," after a Scottish castle. In 1924, a fire and accompanying structural accident caused damage throughout the building. Because of this, Groom renovated the house through the 1930s. After his death, his daughter Susan Groom Harney inherited the estate. Modern building 1959-1970 Harney sold the home to Dr. Murdoch Head in 1959, who embarked on a series of renovations to create a hotel and conference facility. Airlie is an unincorporated hamlet in Fauquier County, Virginia situated between US Route 17 and US Route 29. The village itself runs along Virginia State Route 605 (Fauquier County), State Route 605, which is named Airlie Road. It is home to the Airlie Conference Center and Harry's Restaurant. Pete McCloskey
Paul Norton McCloskey Jr. (born September 29, 1927) is an American politician who represented San Mateo County, California as a Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1967 to 1983. Born in Loma Linda, California, McCloskey pursued a legal career in Palo Alto, California, after graduating from Stanford Law School. He served in the Korean War as a member of the United States Marine Corps. For his service, he was awarded the Navy Cross and the Silver Star. He won election to the House of Representatives in 1967, defeating Shirley Temple in the Republican primary. He co-authored the 1973 Endangered Species Act. He unsuccessfully challenged President Richard Nixon in the 1972 Republican primaries on an anti-Vietnam War platform and was the first member of Congress to publicly call for President Nixon's resignation after the Saturday Night Massacre.
