Air Training Officer
Air Training Officers (ATO) were specially selected commissioned officers who served as surrogate upperclass cadets at the United States Air Force Academy. Establishment of the Air Force Academy The original Air Training Officers were commissioned junior officers who served as a surrogate upperclass for incoming cadets before there were actual upperclass cadets to conduct training and oversee the Cadet Wing. Admission of Women to the Academy In 1976, the ATO program was revived in a modified form when women were allowed to attend the Air Force Academy. The Academy brought in a number of female junior officers to learn about Academy life and act as surrogate upperclassmen specifically for the new female cadets. Commissioned Officer
An officer is a person who holds a position of authority as a member of an armed force or uniformed service. United States Air Force Academy
The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) is a United States service academy in El Paso County, Colorado, immediately north of Colorado Springs. It educates cadets for service in the officer corps of the United States Air Force and United States Space Force. It is the youngest of the five service academies, having graduated its first class in 1959, but is the third in seniority. Graduates of the academy's four-year program receive a Bachelor of Science degree and are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force. The academy is also one of the largest tourist attractions in Colorado, attracting approximately a million visitors each year. Survival, Evasion, Resistance And Escape
Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) is a training program, best known by its military acronym, that prepares U.S. military personnel, U.S. Department of Defense civilians, and private military contractors to survive and "return with honor" in survival scenarios. The curriculum includes survival skills, evading capture, application of the military code of conduct, and techniques for escape from captivity. Formally established by the U.S. Air Force at the end of World War II and the start of the Cold War, it was extended to the Navy and United States Marine Corps and consolidated within the Air Force during the Korean War with greater focus on "resistance training." During the Vietnam War (1959–1975), there was clear need for "Jungle" survival training and greater public focus on American POWs. Airmanship
Airmanship is skill and knowledge applied to aerial navigation, similar to seamanship in maritime navigation. Airmanship covers a broad range of desirable behaviors and abilities in an aviator. Jacks Valley (United States Air Force Academy)
Jacks Valley (also written as "Jack's Valley") is a training complex on the grounds of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is used for military field training. Jacks Valley is used year-round by different military units and some civilian groups. However, its primary use is during the second half of Basic Cadet Training (BCT) each summer. During BCT, the new cadets (or "basic cadets") train in a field encampment environment. The basic cadets march to and from Jacks Valley. While in Jacks Valley, they undergo one of the most physically demanding parts of their training at the Academy.
