Aincrad
is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. The series takes place in the then-near future and focuses on protagonists Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki as they play through various virtual reality MMORPG worlds. Kawahara originally wrote the series as a web novel on his website from 2002 to 2008. The light novels began publication on ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko imprint from April 10, 2009, with a spin-off series launching in October 2012. The series has spawned twelve manga adaptations published by ASCII Media Works and Kadokawa. The novels and the manga adaptations have been licensed for release in North America by Yen Press. Kirito (Sword Art Online)
, born as , is a fictional character and the protagonist of the ''Sword Art Online'' series of light novels written by Reki Kawahara. Known by a portmanteau of his name, which is his user name in the ''Sword Art Online'' video game which the series are partially set in. Kirito is a teenager who was chosen as one of 1,000 beta testers for a new virtual reality video game: ''Sword Art Online''. After the game is released to the general public, he and the rest of the 10,000 players discover that they are unable to log out and are trapped in the simulation unless they manage to beat the game. is a Japanese light novel author. He is best known as the creator of ''Sword Art Online'' and '' Accel World'', both of which have been adapted into anime. He has also written '' The Isolator''. Career Kawahara wrote the first volume of ''Sword Art Online'' in 2001 as a competition entry for the 2002 ASCII Media Works , but refrained from submitting it as he had exceeded the page limit; he instead published it as a web novel under the pen name .Afterword of the first light novel volume Over time, he added three further main arcs and several short stories, which like the first arc Aincrad, were later adapted into the light novels.
