Ainaži
Ainaži (pronounced ; et, Heinaste) is a port town in Limbaži Municipality in the Vidzeme region of Latvia. The town is located near the Estonian border on the site of an ancient Livonian fishing village. Before 1917, it was known by its German name Haynasch (russian: Гайнаш, ''Gainash''). Etymology "Ainaži " may be derived from the Estonian word ''heinastee'' meaning "hay-road". Other possibilities include the Livonian words ''aaina'' meaning "hay", or ''ainagi'' meaning "lonely". In the Middle Ages, the town was in German as ''Haynasch''. History Ainaži existed for centuries as a Livonian fishing village. The town itself was first mentioned in 1564, and through the ages, changed hands among various barons and estates. Ainaži entered a great period of growth in the 1870s when its history of shipbuilding and seafaring began. In the 19th century, Vidzeme and Courland was covered with vast forests of pine trees. Ainaži Lighthouse
__NOTOC__ Ainaži Lighthouse ( Latvian: ''Ainažu bāka'') is a lighthouse located in Ainaži on the Bay of Riga - of the Baltic Sea. History The Ainahi lighthouse was built in 1930, originally serving as a guide for the nearby Ainaži port and harbour. During World War II, the harbour was bombarded by German German(s) may refer to: * Germany (of or related to) ** Germania (historical use) * Germans, citizens of Germany, people of German ancestry, or native speakers of the German language ** For citizens of Germany, see also German nationality law **Ge ... bombers; causing the village to lose its processing factory and fishing importance - therefore making the lighthouse insignificant. The village, port and harbour were rebuilt under Soviet control - bringing back the importance of the lighthouse. The lighthouse was reconstructed and furthermore renovated in the 1990s.
