"Ain't It Funny What a Difference Just a Few Hours Make" is a popular song, introduced in the 1904 Broadway show ''The Yankee Consul'', and briefly becoming a standard. The song is a lament by Abijah Booze, the American Consul in Puerto Plata, who regrets having to rise early. Booze's role in the premier was played by Raymond Hitchcock, his first starring role.Green, ''Encyclopedia of the Musical Theatre'', p. 192. The title is a refrain found throughout the song: Although almost completely forgotten today, a version of the song by a popular singer of the time known as Billy Murray is downloadable at several websites. A show tune is a song originally written as part of the score of a work of musical theatre or musical film, especially if the piece in question has become a standard, more or less detached in most people's minds from the original context. Though show tunes vary in style, they do tend to share common characteristics—they usually fit the context of a story being told in the original musical, they are useful in enhancing and heightening choice moments. Henry Martyn Blossom (May 10, 1866 – March 23, 1919) was an American playwright and lyricist. Biography Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he teamed with Victor Herbert on several popular operettas. His first Broadway musical project was ''The Yankee Consul'' (1904) for composer Alfred G. Robyn, after which he primarily wrote for Herbert, including ''Mlle. Modiste'' (1905), ''The Red Mill'' (1906), ''Baron Trenck'' (1911), '' The Only Girl'' (1914), ''The Princess Pat'' (1915), '' Eileen'' (1917), and '' Kiss Me Again'' (film version of ''Mlle. Modiste'', 1931). He also wrote "When Uncle Sam is Ruler of the Sea" with Victor Herbert in 1916, "It's Not the Uniform That Makes the Man" with A. Baldwin Sloane in 1917 and "I Want to Go Back to the War" with Percival Knight (music was by Raymond Hubbell) in 1919. Blossom was also involved with several shows that failed to reach Broadway. Billy Murray (singer)
William Thomas Murray (May 25, 1877 – August 17, 1954) was one of the most popular singers in the United States in the early 20th century. While he received star billing in vaudeville, he was best known for his prolific work in the recording studio, making records for almost every record label of the era. Life and career Billy Murray was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Patrick and Julia (Kelleher) Murray, immigrants from County Kerry, Ireland. His parents moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1882, where he grew up. He became fascinated with the theater and joined a traveling vaudeville troupe in 1893. He also performed in minstrel shows early in his career. In 1897 Murray made his first recordings for Peter Bacigalupi, the owner of a phonograph company in San Francisco. As of 2010, none of Murray's cylinder records with Bacigalupi are known to have survived.
