Ahupuaʻa
Ahupuaʻa () is a Hawaiian term for a large traditional socioeconomic, geologic, and climatic subdivision of land (comparable to the tapere in the Southern Cook Islands). It usually extends from the mountains to the sea and generally includes one or more complete watersheds and marine resources. The predominant traditional system in the eight high islands of the Main Hawaiian Islands was based on the ahupua’a. Each ahupua‘a contained a cross section of island resources and they were managed within a complex social system associated with each area. The general belief is that each ahupua‘a met the needs of the local population with an excess for tribute and trade. Each ahupua`a contained resources the Hawaiian community needed like wood from the Koa tree to build homes or food like fish and taro. Konohiki
A ''konohiki'' is a headman of a land division or ahupuaʻa of the Kingdom of Hawaii who administered the land ruled by an aliʻi chief. Background The lands of the ruling chiefs of Hawaii were divided into radial divisions of land when possible. These divisions were under the control of other smaller chiefs and managed by a steward. Land was divided up in strict adherence to the wishes of the ''ali‘i nui''. The island was called the ''mokupuni'' and was split into several ''moku''. The ''moku'' (district) parameters ran from the highest mountain top, down to the sea. These divisions were ruled by an ''aliʻi ʻaimoku'' who would have been appointed by the ruling chief. Each of these ''mokus'' were further split into ''ahupuaau'', named after the dividing boundary alter where taxes were collected for each area during the Makahiki. Hawaiian Petrel
The Hawaiian petrel or ''uau'' (''Pterodroma sandwichensis'') is a large, dark grey-brown and white petrel that is endemic to Hawaii. Distribution The Hawaiian petrel was formerly found on all the main Hawaiian Islands except Niihau, but today it is mostly restricted to Haleakalā crater on Maui; smaller populations exist on Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii, Waimea Canyon on the island of Kauai, Lānaihale on Lānai, and possibly Molokai. It is also reportedly seen on the Galapagos Islands. Behavior Feeding Their diet consists of 50–75% squid, and smaller percentages of fish and crustaceans. Breeding The birds nest in burrows or rock crevices. The breeding extends from March to October. The female lays one white egg.
