Glade (geography)
In the most general sense, a glade or clearing is an open area within a forest. Glades are often grassy meadows under the canopy of deciduous trees such as red alder or quaking aspen in western North America. They also represent openings in forests where local conditions such as avalanches, poor soils, or fire damage have created semipermanent clearings. They are very important to herbivorous animals, such as deer and elk, for forage and denning activities. Sometimes the word is used in a looser sense, as in the treeless wetlands of the Everglades of Florida. In the central United States, calcareous glades occur with rocky, prairie-like habitats in areas of shallow soil. Glades are characterized by unique plant and animal communities that are adapted to harsh and dry conditions. Martti Johannes Aho
Martti Johannes Aho (19 March 1896 – 21 June 1968) was a Finnish colonel. He is one of the four double recipients of the Knight of the Mannerheim Cross, 2nd Class. Martti Aho participated in the Finnish Civil War in 1918 and in the Aunus expedition of 1919–1920. He served in the Border Guard as a company commander before the Winter War and during the war he was first a company commander, and later the commander of ''Erillinen pataljoona'' 8 (ErP 8; Detached Battalion 8). Aho was wounded twice during the Winter War. In the beginning of the Continuation War, Major Aho commanded Infantry Regiment 50 (''Jalkaväkirykmentti'' 50, JR 50), which belonged to the 11th Infantry Division. Due to his skilled command, during the Army of Karelia's breakthrough and the conquest of Petrozavodsk, Aho was rewarded the Mannerheim Cross on 1 March 1942 as knight number 52. Tuomas Aho
Tuomas Aho (born 27 May 1981) is a Finnish former professional footballer who played as a centre-back. He made more than 300 appearances in the Veikkausliiga, and had a short stint abroad with Danish Superliga club AGF. Career Early years Aho played youth football for KeuPa, Kumu JT, FC Kouvola and FC Kuusankoski. He made his senior debut for the latter in the 1998 season. He made his debut in the Veikkausliiga on 27 June 1999 for MyPa in a match against FC Jazz. He won the Finnish Cup with the club in 2004. AGF On 23 December 2004, Aho signed with Danish Superliga club AGF after his contract with MyPa had expired. Värttinä
Värttinä (, meaning "spindle") is a Finnish folk music band that started as a project by Sari and Mari Kaasinen in 1983 in the village of Rääkkylä, in Karelia, the southeastern region of Finland. Many transformations have taken place in the band since then. Värttinä shot into fame with the release of their 1991 album ''Oi Dai''. As of 2009, the band consists of three lead female vocalists supported by three acoustic musicians. The vocalists sing in the Karelian dialect of the Finnish language. In August 2005, Värttinä recorded their tenth studio album called '' Miero'' at Finnvox Studios, Helsinki. It was released on 25 January 2006 in Finland, and 30 January 2006 worldwide. Susan Aho
Susan Aho (born 5 March 1974) is a Finnish folk music singer-songwriter and a member of the Värttinä music group. In 2010, she represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 as part of the duo Kuunkuiskaajat. Biography Susan Aho was born in Espoo, in Southern Finland, near the capital Helsinki. Having played the accordion since she was 13, Aho joined Värttinä in 1998, replacing Riitta Kossi, and was the accordionist and a vocalist on their album ''Vihma''. By the next album, ''Ilmatar'' (2001) she confined herself to singing, having been replaced as accordionist by Markku Lepistö. She studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and is involved in a variety of other projects besides Värttinä. Sebastian Johannes Aho (born 17 February 1996) is a Swedish professional ice hockey defenceman for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL). Aho was drafted by the Islanders, 139th overall, in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He is of Finnish descent through his father. Playing career SHL Aho played as a youth with IF Björklöven before moving the fellow Swedish club, Skellefteå AIK. Sebastian Antero Aho (born 26 July 1997) is a Finnish professional ice hockey player and alternate captain for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). Altaria is a Finnish heavy metal band from Jakobstad, who have released four albums on the record label Metal Heaven, a fifth on Escape Music and a sixth on Reaper Entertainment. History In January 2008, the band decided to part ways with their record label Metal Heaven for undisclosed reasons. In the same month, bass player Marko Pukkila parted ways with the band after an argument concerning the split with Metal Heaven, and was replaced as vocalist by Ex-Terrorwheel bass player, Marco Luponero. After that, the only original member still active with Altaria at the time was Tony Smedjebacka. Towards the later part of 2008 the band announced on their website that they were in the process of writing songs for their fifth (fourth full) studio album. Ninos Aho
Ninos Aho ( syc, ܢܝܢܘܣ ܐܚܐ; April 24, 1945 – July 15, 2013), was an Assyrian poet and activist. He is recognized one of the pioneers of the modern Assyrian nationalistic movement. Biography Malfono Ninos Aho was born to an Assyrian family in the small village of Gerkeh-Shamo in Syria. He moved to Qamishli and later to Damascus in order to continue his studies. In 1971, Aho emigrated to the United States. After residing in the United States for twenty years, Malfono Ninos returned to Syria with his wife, Ogareet, and their four children in order to authentically promote his belief in the Assyrian cause. In 2001, Aho and his family returned to the United States when Aho was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, he died due to complications on July 15, 2013 in San Pedro, CA. Kalevi Aho
Kalevi Ensio Aho (born 9 March 1949) is a Finnish composer. Early years Aho began his interest in music at the age of ten, when he discovered a mandolin in his home and began to teach himself how to play it. He soon was taken under the tutelage of Martti Loikkanen, the boy's 4th grade teacher and founder of a local youth mandolin ensemble in Forssa. After learning how to read sheet music, Aho immediately started composing. Aho progressed so fast on the instrument that Loikkanen suggested he study the violin as well, with Loikkanen giving him private lessons. Aho also began to learn violin at an incredible speed, with him later recalling, "Martti taught me at home for free until I started skipping him out of my playing skills and he suggested changing teachers."
