Aguas Zarcas Volcanic Field
Aguas Zarcas volcanic field is a field of pyroclastic cones located in the Aguas Zarcas district, San Carlos canton of the Alajuela province, Costa Rica. Physical aspects Located in the North flank of the Platanar Volcano, it is composed of at least nine cones, of which one is recognized as a hill () and the remaining eight as hillocks (). The sides of the cones are slanted between 10 and 30 degrees, the cones have an elongated shape in the East to West direction and the complex runs in the North to South direction, evidence of tectonic origin. Previous lava flow activity is appreciated in some of the cones. Pyroclastic Cone
Volcanic cones are among the simplest volcanic landforms. They are built by ejecta from a volcanic vent, piling up around the vent in the shape of a cone with a central crater. Volcanic cones are of different types, depending upon the nature and size of the fragments ejected during the eruption. Types of volcanic cones include stratocones, spatter cones, tuff cones, and cinder cones. Stratocone Stratocones are large cone-shaped volcanoes made up of lava flows, explosively erupted pyroclastic rocks, and igneous intrusives that are typically centered around a cylindrical vent. Aguas Zarcas is a district of the San Carlos canton, in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica. Toponymy The name of Aguas Zarcas, comes from the hot spring waters that could well be called "Aguas de azul suave". History From 1800, Germans, Italians and Spaniards formed the ancestors of Aguas Zarcas, the same ones that founded the Spanish colony. Its colonizers were in charge of carrying out bites in the mountain to facilitate the arrival to the inhabitants that came from Villa Quesada looking for a place where to live. San Carlos is a canton in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica. The capital city of the canton is Ciudad Quesada. History San Carlos was created on 26 September 1911 by decree 17. Alajuela Province
Alajuela () is a province of Costa Rica. It is located in the north-central part of the country, bordering Nicaragua to the north. It also borders the provinces of Heredia to the east, San José to the south, Puntarenas to the southwest and Guanacaste to the west. As of 2011, the province had a population of 885,571. Platanar Volcano
Platanar Volcano is located in the Cordillera Central (Costa Rica), Cordillera Central mountain range. Part of a complex that covers and is dominated by Porvenir Volcano at . It is located within the Juan Castro Blanco National Park. Physical aspects It has a destroyed crater to the northwest. Prehistoric lava flows on its western flank; one of them, the so-called Florida flow, was perhaps created by Platanar's most recent activity. Cerro Porvenir has a truncated caldera at the summit with a cone inside. Both of these are part of a composed stratovolcano of Upper Pleistocene age that on Platanar's side overlies the remains of Palmera's collapsed caldera, of probable late Pleistocene age.
