Agnes Samaria
Agnes Maryna Samaria (born 11 August 1972 in Otjiwarongo) is a retired Namibian middle-distance runner who specialized in the 800 metres. Samaria won two of the three medals that the country won at the 2007 All-Africa Games. She has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2005. Iris MarÃa Fuentes-Pila Ortiz (born 10 August 1980, in Santander) is a Spanish middle distance runner who specializes in the 1500 metres. She finished eleventh at the 2002 European Championships. She also competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics, reaching the semi-final. She and her sisters, Margarita and Zulema, were selected for the Spanish 2007 European Indoor Championships team. The 15th African Championships in Athletics were held in Mauritius between August 9 and August 13, 2006. The event was staged at Stade Germain Comarmond in Bambous, Rivière Noire District. This was the second time when the African Championships in Athletics were hosted in Mauritius, the first was in 1992. Many world-class runners were competing, but in terms of the field events the standard was poor. In addition, some of those, especially the throwing events, had very few participants as African federations cannot afford to send large teams. The 10th World Championships in Athletics, under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), were held in the Olympic Stadium, Helsinki, Finland (6 August 2005 – 14 August 2005), the site of the first IAAF World Championships in 1983. One theme of the 2005 championships was paralympic events, some of which were included as exhibition events. Much of the event was played in extremely heavy rainfall. Background Bidding The original winning bid for the competition was for London but the cost to build the required stadium at Picketts Lock and host the event was deemed too expensive by the government.
