Agnes Kalaniho'okaha Cope
Agnes Kalanihoʻokaha Cope (November 7, 1924November 16, 2015) was an expert in traditional Hawaiian culture. A spiritual healer, Cope helped establish the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center after recognizing barriers Native Hawaiians faced in receiving healthcare. She was also a hula master and founded the Waianae Coast Culture and Arts Society to preserve traditional Hawaiian knowledge and practice. Early life and education Agnes Kalaniho‘okaha Mengler was born on November 7, 1924, in Honolulu. Her parents were Henry T. Mengler, a German man, and Sarah Kalaniho’okaha Hakuole Mengler, a native Hawaiian from Maui. Cope learned to speak Hawaiian from her mother and studied hula under kumu Lokalia Montgomery. Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center
The Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC), founded in 1972, is a community health center serving the healthcare needs of the Wai‘anae Coast on the west side of O‘ahu, in the U.S. state of Hawaii. When it was first established, WCCHC had one doctor and five staff members. In its 40th year in business, WCCHC had 540 employees at the main center in Wai‘anae and four satellite clinics in surrounding areas, including Kapolei and Waipahu. In 2010, WCCHC served nearly 29,000 patients, with 67 percent at or below the federal poverty level. The Health Center was developed by the community, for the community, and the majority of its board of directors are from the community. Honpa Hongwanji Mission Of Hawaii
The Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii ( ja, 本派本願寺ハワイ別院, ''Honpa Honganji Hawai Betsuin'') is a district of the Nishi (West) Hongwanji branch of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, a school of Mahayana Pure Land Buddhism. History Jodo Shinshu Buddhism was established in Hawaii as a result of the immigration of Japanese people to work the sugarcane plantations in Hawaii. The first Hongwanji temple in the Hawaiian islands was dedicated on March 3, 1889. In 1897, the Nishi Hongwanji in Kyoto, Japan began sending official ministers to establish temples for Japanese immigrants in Hawaii and the mainland United States. The first was Kenjun Miyamoto, who laid the groundwork for the ministry. Honi Satomi was the first priest, serving from 1898 until 1900, when he returned to Japan. Nānākuli, Hawaii
Nānākuli () is a census-designated place (CDP) on the west coast of the island of Oahu, City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. In Hawaiian, ''nānā kuli'' means literally "look at knee". The population was 11,461 at the 2020 census. Geography Nānākuli is 48 km (30 miles) away from Honolulu, and is located near the southern end of the Waiʻanae mountain. It is accessible from Farrington Highway, though most residents live in the valley. A popular park, Nānākuli Beach Park, is nearby. Kamehameha Schools
Kamehameha Schools, formerly called Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate (KSBE), is a private school system in Hawaii established by the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate, under the terms of the will of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, who was a formal member of the House of Kamehameha. Bishop's will established a trust called the "Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate" that is Hawaii's largest private landowner. Originally established in 1887 as an all-boys school for native Hawaiian children, it shared its grounds with the Bishop Museum. After it moved to another location, the museum took over two school halls. Kamehameha Schools opened its girls' school in 1894. It became coeducational in 1965. The Kapālama campus opened in 1931, while the Maui and Hawaii campuses opened in 1996 and 2001, respectively. Neil Abercrombie
Neil Abercrombie (born June 26, 1938) is an American politician who served as the seventh governor of Hawaii from 2010 to 2014. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Born in Buffalo, New York, Abercrombie is a graduate of Union College and the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. He began his political career in 1975, winning a seat in the Hawaii House of Representatives. He served in the Hawaii House until 1979, when he was elected to the Hawaii State Senate. Upon the resignation of Cecil Heftel, who resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives to run for governor, Abercrombie was elected to his vacant seat in a special election in 1986, but lost the Democratic primary for a full term on the same day.
