Agios Nikolaos, Cephalonia
Agios Nikolaos (Greek: Άγιος Νικόλαος) is a village in the municipal unit of Eleios-Pronnoi on the island Cephalonia, Greece. Its population is 96 people (2011 census). It is situated in an inland valley, at 280 m elevation. It is 3 km southeast of Digaleto, 4 km north of Xenopoulo, 6 km northwest of Poros and 20 km east of Argostoli. The road from Poros to Sami passes through the village. Agios Nikolaos suffered great damage from the 1953 Ionian earthquake. The village has an elementary school and a church dedicated to Saint Gerasimos. Eleios-Pronnoi ( el, Ελειός-Πρόννοι) is a former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2019 local government reform it is part of the municipality Argostoli, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 111.687 km2. Population 3,677 (2011 census). The seat of the municipality was in Pastra (pop. 133). The municipal unit contains several mountain ranges, including the eastern part of Mount Ainos. Its largest towns are Póros (pop. 930), Skála (760), and Agía Eiríni (314). It is situated in the saddle between the mountains Ainos and Merovougli, at 540 m elevation. Xenopoulo
Xenopoulo ( el, Ξενόπουλο) is a small village and a community in the island of Kefalonia, Greece. Its population in 2011 was 50 for the village, and 108 for the community, which includes the villages Andriolata (pop. 8) and Kapandriti (pop. 50). Xenopoulo is situated at the eastern slope of Mount Ainos, at about 320 m elevation. It is 3 km northwest of Agia Eirini, 5 km west of Poros and 21 km east of Argostoli. Xenopoulo was devastated by the 1953 Ionian earthquake. Poros ( el, Πόρος) is a picturesque small town located in the municipal unit of Eleios-Pronnoi, some 40 km SE of Argostoli, 28 km SE of Sami and 12 km NE of Skala, in the southeast of Cephalonia, one of the Ionian Islands of Greece. Argostoli ( el, Αργοστόλι, Katharevousa: Ἀργοστόλιον) is a town and a municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2019 local government reform it is one of the three municipalities on the island. It has been the capital and administrative centre of Kefalonia since 1757, following a population shift down from the old capital of Agios Georgios (also known as Kastro) to take advantage of the trading opportunities provided by the sheltered bay upon which Argostoli sits. 1953 Ionian Earthquake
The 1953 Ionian earthquake (also known as the Great Kefalonia earthquake) struck the southern Ionian Islands in Greece on August 12. In mid-August, there were over 113 recorded earthquakes in the region between Kefalonia and Zakynthos, and the most destructive was the August 12 earthquake. The event measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale, raised the whole island of Kefalonia by , and caused widespread damage throughout the islands of Kefalonia and Zakynthos. The maximum felt intensity of shaking was X (''extreme'') on the Mercalli intensity scale. Between 445 and 800 people were killed. Gerasimus Of Kefalonia
Gerasimos of Kefalonia (Greek: Άγιος Γεράσιμος) is the patron saint of the island of Kefalonia in Greece. Life Gerasimos (1506–1579) came from the aristocratic and wealthy Notaras family. He was ordained a monk at Mount Athos, went to Jerusalem for 12 years, spent some time in Crete and Zakynthos and in 1555 arrived on Kefalonia. He spent his first 5 years in a cave in the area known as Lassi. He subsequently cultivated the area where the monastery of Saint Gerasimos now exists near Valsamata. The monastery which he established cared for the poor and became a center for charity. Veneration Saint Gerasimos is believed by natives of Kefalonia to protect them and to also heal them of illness. Many natives of the island name their children after Saint Gerasimos as a tribute to the saint who protects them.
