Béthune
Béthune ( ; archaic and ''Bethwyn'' historically in English) is a city in northern France, sub-prefecture of the Pas-de-Calais department. Geography Béthune is located in the former province of Artois. It is situated south-east of Calais, west of Lille, and north of Paris. Landmarks Béthune is a town rich in architectural heritage and history. It has, among other features, a large paved square with shops, cafés, and a (133 steps) belfry standing in the center from the top of which the Belgian border can be seen. The chime of the belfry is composed of thirty-six bells. A belfry (French:''"beffroi"'') has stood on the site since 1346. The current belfry plays melodies every 15 minutes, including the ch'ti (regional patois) children's lullaby "min p'tit quinquin" (my little darling). Barlin, Pas-de-Calais
Barlin () is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region in northern France. Geography A small ex-coal mining town, now a light engineering and farming commune, Barlin is situated south of Béthune and southwest of Lille, at the junction of the D57, D179 and the D188 roads. History Barlin dates to at least 1141, the year of the first mention of the parish of Barlin in a manuscript now kept in the National Archives. It was then spelt ''Ballin'' or ''Bellin''. The name changed several times over the centuries, being recorded as ''Ballin'' in 1141, ''Bellin'' in 1438 and ''Barlaing'' in 1556; it was not until the next century that it became ''Barlin''. Cuinchy
Cuinchy is a Communes of France, commune in the Pas-de-Calais Departments of France, department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography A farming village some east of Béthune and southwest of Lille, at the junction of the D166 and the D166E3 roads, by the banks of the Canal-d’Aire. History The village was the source of the Saer de Quincy, 1st Earl of Winchester, de Quincy family, who played a major part in the history of medieval England and Scotland. Cambrin
Cambrin () is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography A farming and light industrial village some east of Béthune and southwest of Lille, at the junction of the D166 and the N41 roads, by the banks of the small river Surgeon. The marshes of Cambrin are an area of ponds and swamps bordering the communes of Cuinchy and Annequin. They cover 22 hectares and are open to the public. This natural space is managed by the Nature Conservatory Sites of Nord and Pas-de-Calais. As fenland, it plays a major ecological function for the water for the town and surrounding area and contributes to reducing the pollution of surface water. Calonne-Ricouart () is a Communes of France, commune in the Pas-de-Calais Departments of France, department in the Hauts-de-France region of France. Geography Calonne-Ricouart is an ex-coalmining town some southwest of Béthune and southwest of Lille, at the junction of the D70 and the D341 roads, by the banks of the river Clarence (river), Clarence. History The village and the old castle were burned down in 1537 by the troops of Francis I of France, Francis I. The church of St. Pierre was rebuilt between the years 1763 to 1781.
