Edvin Laine
Edvin Laine (13 July 1905 – 18 November 1989) was a Finnish film director. Laine was born Bovellán. Laine directed a comedy '' Aaltoska orkaniseeraa'' and family film ''Sleeping Beauty'', both in 1949. '' The Unknown Soldier'', a film Laine directed in 1955 based on Väinö Linna's novel, was a big sensation in Finland. There have later been two other film adaptations of the same novel but Laine's version remains the best known. Laine also directed another film based on Väinö Linna's book, ''Here, Beneath the North Star'' (1968), which also was a successful movie in Finland. His 1958 film ''Sven Tuuva the Hero'' was entered into the 9th Berlin International Film Festival. Pentti Irjala (23 September 1911 – 25 June 1982) was a Finnish actor. Career Since 1959, Irjala worked for the Finnish National Theatre. He appeared in over a hundred films, making him the actor with one of the longest careers in Finnish film history. He always had supporting roles in films, and was often seen in comic old man roles. Irjala was awarded the Pro Finlandia medal in 1972. Personal life Irjala was married to actress Pia Hattara (1923–2015) since the 1940s. He is buried in the Hietaniemi Cemetery in Helsinki. Matti Helge Ranin (21 November 1926 – 24 November 2013) was a Finnish actor. Ranin had an extensive career in film. He was in his prime as film-actor in the 1950s and 60s, most famously playing Captain Kariluoto in an Edvin Laine film '' The Unknown Soldier''. He also had a recurring role of Toivo Virta in the ''Inspector Palmu'' films and appeared as Lauri Salpakari in ''Here, Beneath the North Star'', the 1968 film adaption of Väinö Linna's novel trilogy '' Under the North Star''. Ranin has also acted extensively as a voice-over artist in children's audio books, cartoons and TV shows.
