After Life (play)
''After Life'' is a play by Jack Thorne (concept by Thorne, Bunny Christie, and Jeremy Herrin) based on the After Life (film), film of the same name by Hirokazu Kore-eda. Production history The play made its world premiere in the Dorfman Theatre at the Royal National Theatre, London from 2 June 2021, running until 7 August, It is directed by Jeremy Herrin, designed by Bunny Christie and co-produced by Headlong (theatre company), Headlong. The production was originally due to open in 2020, however was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The audience are socially distanced due to the Government guidelines. Jack Thorne
Jack Thorne FRSL (born 6 December 1978) is a British playwright, television writer, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for writing the stage play ''Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'', the films ''Wonder'' and '' Enola Holmes'', and the television programme ''His Dark Materials''. Early life Thorne was born in Bristol on 6 December 1978. He was educated at St. Bartholomew's School in Newbury, Berkshire, and matriculated in 1998 at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He was forced to "degrade" (drop out to return at a later date) due to ill health in his third year, but returned to finish his studies and graduated with lower second-class honours in 2002. Hirokazu Kore-eda
is a Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter, and editor. He began his career in television and has since directed more than a dozen feature films, including '' Nobody Knows'' (2004), '' Still Walking'' (2008), and '' After the Storm'' (2016). He won the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for '' Like Father, Like Son'' and won the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for ''Shoplifters''. Personal life Kore-eda's father was a '' wansei''. His paternal grandparents could not marry under Japanese law at the time as they had the same last name, so they eloped to Taiwan where they could, which was then under Japanese colonial rule. He has cited this as a reason for his affinity toward Taiwan. Kore-eda was born in Nerima, Tokyo, Japan. He is the youngest of three children with two older sisters. Bunny Christie
Bunny Christie (born 1962) is a Scottish theatre set designer. Career She was born in St Andrews, educated at Madras College and at the Central School of Art in London. She has won four Olivier Awards and also worked on Kenneth Branagh's Oscar-nominated short film '' Swan Song''. Christie designed the sets and costumes for ''The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time'', which was initially produced at the Royal National Theatre in 2012, and also was performed on Broadway in 2014. Jeremy Herrin
Jeremy Herrin is an English theatre director. He is the artistic director of Headlong Theatre. Career Having trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Herrin was an assistant director under Stephen Daldry at the Royal Court Theatre from 1993 to 1995. He then was a staff director at the Royal National Theatre, National Theatre from 1995 to 1999. In 2000 he became associate director at Live Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne, where his credits included plays by Richard Bean and Joe Harbot. His breakthrough show was the critically successful ''That Face'' by Polly Stenham at the Royal Court Upstairs in 2007, which subsequently transferred to the West End theatre, West End. ''After Life'', known in Japan as , is a 1998 Japanese film edited, written, and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda starring Arata, Erika Oda and Susumu Terajima. Premiered on 11 September 1998 at the 1998 Toronto International Film Festival and distributed in over 30 countries, the film brought international recognition to Kore-eda's work. The film was also shown at the 1998 San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI prize "for its universal theme, its empathy for nostalgia and its homage to cinema as transcending life".
