African Women In Mathematics Association
The African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) is a professional society whose mission is to promote mathematics to African women and girls, to support women's careers in mathematics, to create equal opportunity and equal treatment in the African mathematical community, and to create a meeting place for mathematical African women. The AWMA was founded in 2013. AWMA has approximately 300 members from over 30 countries and from all regions of Africa. It hosts events to encourage African girls' participation in mathematics. History In 1986, the African Mathematical Union founded the commission on women and mathematics (AMUCWMA). At the AMUCWMA's 2012 conference in Ouagadougou, which drew over 70 attendees, a panel on the state on women in mathematics in Africa was held. European Women In Mathematics
European Women in Mathematics (EWM) is an international association of women working in the field of mathematics in Europe. The association participates in political and strategic work to promote the role of women in mathematics and offers its members direct support. Its goals include encouraging women to study mathematics and providing visibility to women mathematicians. It is the "first and best known" of several organizations devoted to women in mathematics in Europe. Rebecca Walo Omana
Rebecca Walo Omana (born 15 July 1951) is a Congolese mathematician, professor, and reverend sister. Omana became the first female mathematics professor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1982. She is the director of the mathematics and informatics doctoral program at the University of Kinshasa and is a vice-president of the African Women in Mathematics Association. Her mathematical interests lie in differential equations, nonlinear analysis, and modeling. Biography Omana was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on 15 July 1951. She was passionate about mathematics during high school. She made her religious profession to the Catholic Soeurs de St Francois d'Assise at the age of 18, and made her sacred vows in 1978. Joséphine Guidy Wandja
Joséphine Guidy Wandja (born 1945, also Guidy-Wandja) is an Ivorian mathematician. She is the first African woman with a PhD in mathematics. Early life She moved to France aged 14. She attended the Lycée Jules-Ferry in Paris, and later the Pierre and Marie Curie University. Her master's degree thesis was entitled ''Sous les courbes fermées convexes du plan et le théorème des quatre sommets'' (''Under closed convex curves in the plane and the theorem of four peaks''). Whilst working in Paris in the late 1960s she was advised by René Thom, Henri Cartan and Paulette Liberman. She studied for a PhD at the University of Abidjan, becoming the first African woman to get a PhD in mathematics. Maryam Mirzakhani
Maryam Mirzakhani ( fa, مریم میرزاخانی, ; 12 May 1977 – 14 July 2017) was an Iranian mathematician and a professor of mathematics at Stanford University. Her research topics included Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, and symplectic geometry. In 2005, as a result of her research, she was honored in ''Popular Science's'' fourth annual "Brilliant 10" in which she was acknowledged as one of the top 10 young minds who have pushed their fields in innovative directions. On 13 August 2014, Mirzakhani was honored with the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics, becoming the first Iranian to be honored with the award and the first of only two women to date.
