Adwick Le Street
Adwick le Street is a village in the City of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. The Adwick ward of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council had a population of 15,911 at the 2011 Census. It is situated north-west of Doncaster. Under the 2011 census, the settlement had a population of 10,507. Adwick's district, in the 1920s, had a population of around 12,000. The West Riding of Yorkshire's Adwick le Street Urban District existed until 1974. Within the former urban district lies the model village of Woodlands, built for Brodsworth Colliery. History Roman The town derives its name from the great north British Roman routeway, Ermine Street. This road, also known as the Roman Ridge, follows the A638 (former A1) northwards through the centre of Doncaster (former Danum) until the junction of the A635 and A638. Adwick Railway Station
Adwick railway station serves the communities of Adwick le Street and Carcroft, in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. Located on the line linking Leeds to Doncaster via Wakefield, immediately south-east of the point where it passes beneath Church Lane, the present station is the second to serve Adwick: the first, the main building of which still stands, lay on the other side of the present road bridge. History Opened in March 1866 as an intermediate stop on the West Riding and Grimsby Railway's main line from Wakefield Westgate to Doncaster, the station was at first called "Adwick-le-Street and Carcroft"; the name was changed in 1880 to "Carcroft and Adwick-le-Street". The station's main building, which still stands today – though no longer part of the present station – comprised a booking office, waiting room, and station master's house. Adwick upon Dearne is a small village and civil parish on the A6023 road near Mexborough. The Adwick upon Dearne civil parish covers Adwick itself and a small part of northern Mexborough. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 333. It lies near Mexborough and is in the borough of Doncaster. The Church of St John is a Grade II* listed building.
