Advance Newspapers, based in Hudsonville, Michigan, published weekly community newspapers for Kent County, Michigan and portions of Muskegon County, Michigan, Muskegon, Ottawa County, Michigan, Ottawa, and Allegan County, Michigan, Allegan counties. Advance Newspapers started as an independent company, later purchased by Advance Publications which later placed them into their MLive Media Group unit. MLive Media Group ceased publication of the seven community newspapers as of January 27, 2019, citing the "cost of publishing the products exceeded the company’s ability to sustain production." Cedar Springs, Michigan
Cedar Springs is a city in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,509 at the 2010 census. Cedar Springs is a northern city of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is about north of Grand Rapids. History The area was first settled by Robin Hicks as early as 1855, and the first post office was established on February 4, 1857, with Nicholas Hill serving as the first postmaster. The new village was platted in 1859. The Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad built a railway line through the area in 1868 and allowed for the growth of the village, which incorporated in 1871. The name Cedar Springs came from the abundance of cedar trees and springs found throughout the area. The village incorporated as a city in 1971. Cutlerville is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 17,849 as of the 2020 census. The community is located mostly within Byron Township to the west with a smaller portion within Gaines Township to the east. Kentwood is a city in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 54,304 as of the 2020 census. Gun Lake, Michigan
Gun Lake is a lake in the U.S. state of Michigan, located mostly in Barry County with the southwestern tip extending into Allegan County. Along most of the lake are numerous summer homes, cottages, and permanent residences. The Yankee Springs Recreation Area is based on northeastern portions of the lake. Hopkins, formerly Hopkins Station, is a village within Hopkins Township in Allegan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 610 at the 2010 census. History In 1854, John Hoffmaster settled here. On May 20, 1854, the Hopkins post office was opened with Erastus Congdon as its first postmaster. The Hopkins Station post office opened on March 28, 1870, with postmaster Henry F. Guyot. Hopkins Station was the name of the railroad depot opened in 1874. Wayland, Michigan
Wayland is a city in Allegan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,079 at the 2010 census. The city is located at the northwest corner of Wayland Township, but is politically independent. The city has also incorporated a portion of land in the south of adjacent Leighton Township. Sparta, Michigan
Sparta is a village in Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,244 at the 2020 census. The village is located within Sparta Township. Sparta is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is located about north of the city of Grand Rapids. History The Sparta area was first settled in 1844, with the township formally organized in 1846. The first settler in what is now the village was Jonathan Nash in 1846.
