Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland (Van Gogh Series)
Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland was Vincent van Gogh's favorite model during his Hague period. He appears in dozens of drawings, easily identified by his bald head and prominent white whiskers, and he was the model for the drawing which was the basis for van Gogh's later iconic painting ''At Eternity's Gate''. Background He is first mentioned by van Gogh in a letter to Anthon van Rappard, dated around 19 September 1882: "... I’ve also been painting and watercoloring, and in addition I’m drawing many figures from the model as well as scratches .e. 'sketches'on the street. Lately I’ve quite often had a man from the Old Men’s Home to pose. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include Trees and Undergrowth (Van Gogh series), landscapes, Still life paintings by Vincent van Gogh (Paris), still lifes, Portraits by Vincent van Gogh, portraits and Portraits of Vincent van Gogh, self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive paintwork, brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. Not commercially successful, he struggled with severe depression and poverty, eventually leading to his suicide at age thirty-seven. Born into an upper-middle class family, Van Gogh drew as a child and was serious, quiet, and thoughtful. As a young man, he worked as an ar ...

Jacob Baart De La Faille
Jacob Baart de la Faille (1 June 1886, Leeuwarden – 7 August 1959, Heemstede) compiled the first ''catalogue raisonné'' of the work of Vincent van Gogh, published in 1928. The catalogue was revised and republished by an editorial committee in 1970, and this version is considered to be the definitive catalogue of van Gogh's work. His catalogue numbers are preceded by an 'F': thus F612 refers to ''The Starry Night''. Shortly after the publication of the original catalogue, de la Faille became involved in a major fraud affair concerning the Berlin art dealer Otto Wacker. De la Faille had certified the authenticity of 30 paintings which were later determined to be fakes. Biography Jacob-Baart de la Faille was born to a Dutch father, Cornelis Baart de la Faille, and a Belgian mother, Henriette Adriana Krayenhoff. At the University of Utrecht he majored in law, not in art.Dr Jacob Baart de la Faille 1886–1959, in: Hammacher, ed., 1970, p. 39 Writings * J.-B. de La Faille: ''L ...

Vincent Van Gogh Chronology
This is a chronology of the artist Vincent van Gogh. It is based as far as possible on Van Gogh's correspondence. However, it has only been possible to construct the chronology by drawing on additional sources. Most of his letters are not dated and it was only in 1973 that a sufficient dating was established by Jan Hulsker, subsequently revised by Ronald Pickvance and marginally corrected by others. Many other relevant dates in the chronology derive from the biographies of his brother Theo, his uncle and godfather Cent, his friends Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin, and others. Facts and dates which are undisputed (see Resources), remain unreferenced. : 1850 1851 1852 1853 1855 1857 1859 1861 1862 1864 1866 1867 1868 1869 1870 1871 1872 1873 1874 1875 1876 1877 1878 1879 1880 1881 1882 1883 1884 1885 1886 1887 1888 1889 1890 1891 Footnotes References External links __NOTOC__ 1850 *November 6: Vincent van Gogh (Uncle Cent) marries Cornelia Carbentus, in The Hague. ...

At Eternity's Gate
''Sorrowing Old Man (At Eternity's Gate)'' is an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh that he made in 1890 in Saint-Rémy de Provence based on an early lithograph. The painting was completed in early May at a time when he was convalescing from a severe relapse in his health some two months before Death of Vincent van Gogh, his death, which is generally accepted as a suicide. In the 1970 ''catalogue raisonné'', it was given the title ''Worn Out: At Eternity's Gate''. Lithograph The lithograph was based on a pencil drawing ''Worn Out'', one of a series of studies he made in 1882 of a pensioner and war veteran, Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland (Van Gogh series), Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland, at a local almshouse in The Hague and itself a reworking of a drawing and watercolour he had made the previous year. The inspiration for ''Worn Out'' was Hubert von Herkomer, Hubert von Herkomer's ''Sunday at the Chelsea Hospital'', an immensely popular print depicting an old war veteran slumped dead ...
