Adolphus Grimes
Adolphus Grimes (July 6, 1913 – February 6, 1998) was an American Negro league outfielder in the 1940s. A native of Greensboro, Georgia, Grimes played for the Cleveland Buckeyes and the Atlanta Black Crackers in 1943, and played for Atlanta again the following season. Outfielder
An outfielder is a person playing in one of the three defensive positions in baseball or softball, farthest from the batter. These defenders are the left fielder, the center fielder, and the right fielder. As an outfielder, their duty is to catch fly balls and ground balls then to return them to the infield for the out or before the runner advances, if there are any runners on the bases. Greensboro is a town in and the county seat of Greene County, Georgia, United States. Its population was 3,648 as of the 2020 census. The city is located approximately halfway between Atlanta and Augusta on Interstate 20. History Greensboro was founded circa 1780; in 1787, it was designated seat of the newly formed Greene County. Cleveland Buckeyes
The Cleveland Buckeyes were a Negro league baseball team that played from 1942 to 1950 in the Negro American League. The Buckeyes played in two Negro World Series, defeating the Washington Homestead Grays in 1945, and losing to the New York Cubans in 1947. They were based in Cincinnati for their first season and Louisville for their second-to-last season. Founding The Buckeyes were established in 1942 as the Buckeyes Baseball Club, established initially in Cincinnati, Ohio (Ohio being the Buckeye State), scheduling seven league games in Cincinnati and nine in Cleveland, plus another five in Meadville, Pennsylvania. The following season, owner Ernest White of Erie made Cleveland the team's home city, where they played their games at League Park. Atlanta Black Crackers (1943–1949)
The Atlanta Black Crackers were a professional Negro league baseball team which played during the mid-20th century. They were a minor Negro league team and were named after the original Atlanta Black Crackers. Beginnings In 1943, four years after the original Black Crackers ceased operations, a new team formed to determine if the Atlanta area could support a profitable black team. John H. Harden, the owner at the time the original Black Crackers disbanded, was again financing the team. After two financially successful years barnstorming, Atlanta returned to league play in the newly rebooted Negro Southern League.
