Adolphe-Ernest Fould
Adolphe-Ernest Fould (17 July 1824 – 13 February 1875) was a French banker and politician. He played a key role in the foundation of Banque de Paris (now part of BNP Paribas) and the Ottoman Bank. He was the son of Achille Fould, who served as French minister of finance during the Presidency of Napoleon III. The Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas (“Bank of Paris and the Netherlands”), generally referred to from 1982 as Paribas, was a French investment bank based in Paris. In May 2000, it merged with the Banque Nationale de Paris to form BNP Paribas. History Background In the early 1820s, Louis-Raphaël Bischoffsheim founded a private banking establishment in Amsterdam in his own name. His brother Jonathan-Raphaël created a branch in Antwerp in 1827 before settling in Brussels in 1836. The Ottoman Bank ( tr, Osmanlı Bankası), known from 1863 to 1925 as the Imperial Ottoman Bank (french: Banque Impériale Ottomane, ota, بانق عثمانی شاهانه) and correspondingly referred to by its French acronym BIO, was a bank that played a major role in the financial history of the Ottoman Empire. Achille Fould (17 November 18005 October 1867) was a French financier and politician. Early life Achille Fould was born on 17 November 1800 in Paris. His father, Beer Léon Fould, was a Ashkenazi Jew, Jewish banker. Career Fould began his career as a banker for the family bank. As early as 1842 he entered political life, having been elected in that year as a deputy for the department of the Hautes-Pyrénées. From that time to his death he actively busied himself with the affairs of his country. He readily acquiesced in the Revolution of 1848, revolution of February 1848, and is said to have exercised a decided influence in financial matters on the provisional government then formed.
