Adolf Piening
Adolf Cornelius Piening (16 September 1910 – 15 May 1984) was a German naval officer. During World War II, he served in the ''Kriegsmarine'' and commanded the German Type IX submarine, Type IXC U-boat , sinking twenty-six ships on nine patrols, for a total of of Allied shipping. Piening was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. Piening spent two years as a prisoner of war and was released in 1947. He joined the new German Navy, which was established in 1956, serving until becoming team leader at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College. He retired in 1969 with the rank of Captain at sea. Career Piening joined the ''Reichsmarine'' in 1930; the service was renamed as Kriegsmarine in 1935. His first assignment was to the armoured cruiser , after which he served on torpedo boats and Minesweeper (ship), minesweepers, reaching the rank of ''Kapitänleutnant'' by April 1939. Süderende
Süderende ( Fering: ''Söleraanj'', da, Syderende) is a municipality on the island of Föhr in the district of Nordfriesland, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. History The place used to belong to Oldsum, being its southern edge. After Denmark's loss of Schleswig to Prussia in 1864 and the subsequent municipal reformation when Prussia eventually annexed Schleswig-Holstein in 1867, Süderende became independent. In the 17th century a private navigation school was established in Süderende by pastor Richardus Petri which was the first of its kind on the island. It improved the situation of the seafaring population considerably and soon other navigators opened own schools across Föhr. Although Petri lead the Süderende school successfully for many years he never sailed to sea himself. A census in 1787 showed that Süderende had 122 inhabitants, 27 of whom were seafarers. Convoy ON 67 was a trade convoy of merchant ships during the Second World War. It was the 67th of the numbered series of ON convoys Outbound from the British Isles to North America. The Spanish Cross (german: Spanien-Kreuz) was an award of Nazi Germany given to German troops who participated in the Spanish Civil War, fighting for nationalist general, later Spanish caudillo, Francisco Franco. History With the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in July 1936, Germany sent the Condor Legion, drawn from the German air force and army, to aid Franco's Nationalist forces. On 14 April 1939, Germany instituted the Spanish Cross as a decoration for the German airmen and soldiers who fought in the Condor Legion during the war. A number of German Navy ships served in Spanish waters, their crew also qualifying for the cross. The Wehrmacht Long Service Award () was a military service decoration of Nazi Germany issued for satisfactory completion of a number of years in military service. History On 16 March, 1936, Adolf Hitler ordered the institution of a service award in four classes, each class reflecting the completion of a select number of years of military service. The award was bestowed by each branch of the Wehrmacht (army, navy, and air force) and was issued for four years service (fourth class – silver medal), 12 years (third class – gold medal), 18 years (second class – silver cross), 25 years (first class – gold cross), and 40 years (special class). Allied Forces Baltic Approaches (BALTAP) was a Principal Subordinate Command (PSC) of the NATO Military Command Structure, with responsibility for the Baltic Sea area. It was in existence from 1962 to 2002 and consisted of the Danish Armed Forces, units of the West German Bundeswehr and allied wartime reinforcements. The NATO command Baltic Approaches was created on 8 January 1962, with headquarters in Karup, Denmark. It was created at Germany's urging, in order to end the previous separation of the German naval forces between the NATO commands Northern Europe and Central Europe. The 7th U-boat Flotilla (German ''7. Unterseebootsflottille''), also known as Wegener Flotilla, was the seventh operational U-boat combat unit in the Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine''. Founded on 25 June 1938 under the command of ''Korvettenkapitän'' Werner Sobe, it was named in honour of ''Kapitänleutnant'' Bernd Wegener. Wegener, a U-boat commander during World War I, died on 19 August 1915 after his submarine ''U-27'' was sunk by British Q-ship HMS ''Baralong'', which was itself a much disputed battle with the Royal Navy accused of war crimes by the German Navy. The escort carrier or escort aircraft carrier (U.S. hull classification symbol CVE), also called a "jeep carrier" or "baby flattop" in the United States Navy (USN) or "Woolworth Carrier" by the Royal Navy, was a small and slow type of aircraft carrier used by the Royal Navy, the United States Navy, the Imperial Japanese Navy and Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in World War II. They were typically half the length and a third the displacement of larger fleet carriers, slower, more-lightly armed and armored, and carried fewer planes. Escort carriers were most often built upon a commercial ship hull, so they were cheaper and could be built quickly. This was their principal advantage as they could be completed in greater numbers as a stop-gap when fleet carriers were scarce.
