Charles Frederick Hughes
Charles Frederick Hughes (14 October 1866 – 28 May 1934) was an admiral in the United States Navy who served as Chief of Naval Operations from 1927 to 1930. Early life Born in Bath, Maine, Hughes was appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1884. Upon graduation on 8 June 1888, he went to the Fleet for the customary two years at sea preceding a commission as an ensign. He received that commission on 1 July 1890, and was promoted to lieutenant (junior grade) on 27 April 1898. Naval career During the Spanish–American War, Hughes fought in Commodore George Dewey's Asiatic Squadron. He was promoted to lieutenant on 3 March 1899. While serving ashore at the Bureau of Equipment from 1904 to 1906, he was promoted to lieutenant commander on 1 July 1905. During a tour of duty as recorder for the Board of Inspection and Survey between 1909 and 1911, he was promoted to commander. Edward Hughes (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir Edward Hughes (c. 17201794) was a Royal Navy officer who commanded the East Indies Station. Naval career Hughes joined the Royal Navy in 1735, and four years later, was present at the capture of Portobelo, Panama. In 1740, he was promoted to lieutenant and served in the Cartagena expedition of 1741, and at the indecisive Battle of Toulon in 1744. In HMS ''Warwick'', he participated in the action against the ''Glorioso'', but without proper support from the ''Lark'' (which was sailing with the ''Warwick''), the enemy escaped. The commander of the ''Lark'' was subsequently tried and condemned for his conduct, and Hughes received the vacated command. Captain Hughes was with Edward Boscawen at Louisburg and with Charles Saunders at Quebec. He was in continual employment during the peace, and as commodore, commanded the East Indies Station from 1773 to 1777. Sir Richard Hughes, 2nd Baronet
Admiral Sir Richard Hughes, 2nd Baronet ( – 5 January 1812) was a British naval commander. Naval career Hughes was probably born in London, England, the son of Captain Sir Richard Hughes. He entered the Portsmouth Naval Academy in 1739. He served on a number of ships in various locations during his naval career, including from 1763 to 1766. It is known that Hughes was in Canada in 1778, as he was appointed resident commissioner of the Halifax dockyard. This appointment was short, as by August of the same year he became lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia, succeeding Mariot Arbuthnot in that position. During his tenure, the main concern was the protection of the Province. In 1779, he succeeded his father as baronet. He became acting commander-in-chief The Downs in 1781. In 1782 Hughes was second-in-command under Lord Howe at the Relief of Gibraltar. Between 1783 and 1786 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief, Leeward Islands Station. Vice Admiral Sir Cecil Charles Hughes-Hallett KCB CBE (1898–1985) was a senior Royal Navy officer. Biography Born on 6 April 1898, Charles Hughes-Hallett was educated at Bedford School, Emmanuel College, Cambridge, the Royal Naval College, Osborne and at the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth. He served in the Royal Navy during the First World War and was present at the Battle of the Dardanelles and at the Battle of Jutland. After distinguished service during the Second World War he was appointed as Chief of Staff to the Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleet between 1950 and 1951. He was appointed as Head of British Naval Mission, Washington between 1952 and 1954.
