Adjala-Tosorontio, Ontario
Adjala–Tosorontio is a township in south-central Ontario, Canada, in the County of Simcoe. A predominantly rural area, Adjala–Tosorontio contains numerous small villages and hamlets. Many communities were started in Adjala by Irish Catholics who named their hamlets after their home towns in Ireland, or after prominent pioneer families who first settled the area. The municipality has increasingly become home to residents who commute to the Greater Toronto Area. Geographically the area is rolling countryside below the Niagara Escarpment to the west, with the Nottawasaga River cutting through it. "" is a Huron word meaning "Beautiful Mountain", and Adjala was the name of the wife of Chief Tecumseh, for whom the neighbouring township (now called New Tecumseth) was named. Nottawasaga River
The Nottawasaga River is a river in Simcoe County and Dufferin County in Central Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Great Lakes Basin, and is a tributary of Lake Huron. The river flows from the Orangeville Reservoir in the town of Orangeville, Dufferin County, through the Niagara Escarpment and the Minesing Wetlands, the latter a wetland of international significance (Ramsar Convention site), and empties into Nottawasaga Bay, an inlet of Georgian Bay on Lake Huron, at the town of Wasaga Beach, Simcoe County. The river takes its name from the Ojibwe word "Nottawasaga". ''Nottawa'' (or ''Naadowe'' in modern orthography) means "Iroquois" and ''saga'' (''zaagi'' in modern orthography) means "mouth of the river"; the word "Nottawasaga" (''Naddowe-zaagi'' in modern orthography) was used by Algonquin scouts as a warning if they saw Iroquois raiding parties approaching their villages. 2021 Canadian Census
The 2021 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population with a reference date of May 11, 2021. It follows the 2016 Canadian census, which recorded a population of 35,151,728. The overall response rate was 98%, which is slightly lower than the response rate for the 2016 census. It recorded a population of 36,991,981, a 5.2% increase from 2016. Planning Consultation on census program content was from September 11 to December 8, 2017. The census was conducted by Statistics Canada, and was contactless as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. The agency had considered delaying the census until 2022. About 900 supervisors and 31,000 field enumerators were hired to conduct the door-to-door survey of individuals and households who had not completed the census questionnaire by late May or early June. The 2016 Canadian census was an enumeration of Canadian residents, which counted a population of 35,151,728, a change from its 2011 population of 33,476,688. The census, conducted by Statistics Canada, was Canada's seventh quinquennial census. The official census day was May 10, 2016. Census web access codes began arriving in the mail on May 2, 2016. The 2016 census marked the reinstatement of the mandatory long-form census, which had been dropped in favour of the voluntary National Household Survey for the 2011 census. Airlie, Ontario
Airlie is an unincorporated rural community in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Officially located in Adjala–Tosorontio, Adjala–Tosorontio Township, Airlie has historically been associated with both Mulmur, Ontario, Mulmur Township and the former Tosorontio Township (now Adjala–Tosorontio Township) because it is located on the boundary between both townships. History Airlie was founded in the 1860s. The early settlement was also known as "Bonny-Town" and "Mill Hill". A sawmill located at Airlie enabled it to prosper. A post office opened in 1869, and mail was delivered daily. During the 1870s and 1880s, Airlie had two stores, two blacksmith shops, three sawmills, and 12 houses. The Cherry Hotel was located at Airlie, owned by early settlers, the Cherry family. Two churches were built: St. James Episcopal Church in 1886, and Calvin Presbyterian Church in 1889.
