Kathryn Adie (born 19 September 1945) is an English journalist. She was Chief News Correspondent for BBC News between 1989 and 2003, during which time she reported from war zones around the world. She retired from the BBC in early 2003 and works as a freelance presenter with ''From Our Own Correspondent'' on BBC Radio 4. Early life Adie was born in Whitley Bay, Northumberland. Lilias Adie ( – 1704) was a Scottish woman who lived in the coastal village of Torryburn, Fife, Scotland. She was accused of practising witchcraft and fornicating with the devil but died in prison before sentence could be passed. Her intertidal grave is the only known one in Scotland of an accused witch – most were burned. Adie Syndrome
Adie syndrome, also known as Holmes-Adie syndrome, is a neurological disorder characterized by a tonically dilated pupil that reacts slowly to light but shows a more definite response to accommodation (i.e., light-near dissociation). It is frequently seen in females with absent knee or ankle jerks and impaired sweating. The syndrome is caused by damage to the postganglionic fibers of the parasympathetic innervation of the eye, usually by a viral or bacterial infection that causes inflammation, and affects the pupil of the eye and the autonomic nervous system. It is named after the British neurologists William John Adie and Gordon Morgan Holmes, who independently described the same disease in 1931. Alexander Adie
Alexander James Adie FRSE MWS (1775, Edinburgh – 4 December 1858, Edinburgh) was a Scottish maker of medical instruments, optician and meteorologist. He was the inventor of the sympiesometer, patented in 1818. Life He was born the son of John Adie. He was apprenticed in 1789 to his maternal uncle John Miller a mathematical instrument maker on Parliament Close, off the Royal Mile close to St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. In 1800 Adie was working for Miller at 38 South Bridge and the business was described as an optician. Around 1805 went into business together as "Miller and Adie, Opticians" (also serving as mathematical instrument makers, but this was in much less demand) and had a shop at 15 Nicholson Street in the South Side which continued until 1822. After Miller died Adie opened his own shop at 58 Princes Street close to the Royal Scottish Academy. William John Adie
William John Adie MD Ed., FRCP (31 October 1886 – 17 March 1935) was an Australian-born British physician and neurologist known for describing the Adie syndrome and narcolepsy. Biography William Adie was born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia, on 31 October 1886. He was educated at Flinders Street Model School, but had to leave school to support his family at the age of 13 when his father died in 1899. He worked as an office errand boy, and an employer noticed his ability to learn. He funded evening classes for Adie, who was able to pass the university entrance examination. A doctor in Geelong, Dr. Arthur South, inspired him to study medicine. George Mountford Adie (14 January 1901 – 29 July 1989) was a British architect, the co-founder (with Frederick Button) of Adie, Button and Partners in Mayfair, London. George Mountford Adie was born in the UK on 14 January 1901. He started as a stockbroker, before switching to architecture, and co-founding Adie, Button and Partners in 1933. Adrian Paul "Adie" Moses (born 4 May 1975) is an English former footballer. He made over 300 appearances in the Premier League and the Football League between 1993 and 2008, he notably played for Barnsley having also featured for Huddersfield Town, Crewe Alexandra, Lincoln City, Mansfield Town and Gainsborough Trinity.
