It was the first organisation of women's rights in Yemen, and the beginning of the women's rights movement in Yemen. In the 1930s, several clubs were founded for men in Aden, but Yemeni women generally lived secluded in purdah in the harems. Yemen (; ar, ٱلْيَمَن, al-Yaman), officially the Republic of Yemen,, ) is a country in Western Asia. Aden Protectorate
The Aden Protectorate ( ar, محمية عدن ') was a British protectorate in South Arabia which evolved in the hinterland of the port of Aden and in the Hadhramaut following the conquest of Aden by the Bombay Presidency of British India in 1839, and it continued until the 1960s. In 1940 it was divided for administrative purposes into the Western Protectorate and the Eastern Protectorate. Today the territory forms part of the Republic of Yemen. Pardah or purdah (from Hindi-Urdu , , meaning "curtain") is a religious and social practice of female seclusion prevalent among some Muslim and Hindu communities. It belonged to the National Liberation Front (South Yemen) (NLF) during the regime of People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. The GUYW had its predecessor in the Adeni Women's Club, which started the women's movement in Yemen. When the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen was founded under the NLF in 1967, the General Union of Yemeni Women was founded as a part of the regime's policy. The purpose of the GUYW was to enforce the official women's policy of the People's Democratic Republic regime, which was a radical and ambitions state feminism. In 1970, the Socialist regime declared women to be politically, economically and socially equal to men in Article 36 of the Constitution of 1970, and women's suffrage was introduced the same year: this was followed by the new Secular Family Law of 1974.
