Adelong is a small town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, situated on the banks of the Adelong Creek. Adelong sits on the Snowy Mountains Highway and is a part of the Snowy Valleys Council. At the , Adelong had an urban population of 943. Etymology Adelong's name is said to be derived from the local Aboriginal language meaning "along the way" or "plain with a river". History The area now known as Adelong lies on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri people. In 1852 during the Australian Gold Rush, gold was discovered at Upper Adelong. Records around the time indicated a yield of 198 kg of precious metals. In 1855 Adelong was declared a gold field. The Adelong township, which was first established in 1836, came alive when in 1857 William Willams discovered a gold bearing reef ore on Charcoal Hill. Adelong Falls Gold Workings
The Adelong Falls Gold Workings is a heritage-listed former gold processing site and now picnic reserve at Adelong, Snowy Valleys Council, New South Wales, Australia. It was designed and built in 1860 by David Wilson and William Ritchie. It is also known as Adelong Falls Gold Workings/Reserve. The property is owned by the Snowy Valleys Council. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The Adelong Falls Reserve is within the Adelong Creek goldfield, which was proclaimed on 15 February 1855. The existing reservation for Public Recreation was notified on 26 November 1971. Most of the reserve south of Adelong Creek has always been Crown land, with the remainder in private ownership until 1980, when it became part of the reserve. Tumut, New South Wales
Tumut () is a town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, situated on the banks of the Tumut River. Tumut sits on the north-west foothills of the Snowy Mountains and is located on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri, Wolgalu and Ngunnawal Aboriginal peoples. Tumut is often referred to as the 'gateway to the snowy' Snowy Mountains Scheme. The former Tumut Shire was administered from offices located in the town. Tumut is approximately south-west of Sydney and north-east of Melbourne. Tumut is home to a number of historic buildings, including an Anglican church designed by Edmund Blacket and a Courthouse designed by James Barnet. Snowy Mountains Highway
Snowy Mountains Highway is a state highway located in New South Wales, Australia. Its two sections connect the New South Wales South Coast to the Monaro region, and the Monaro to the South West Slopes via the Snowy Mountains. The higher altitude regions of this road are subject to snow over the winter months, and the road also provides access to many parts of the Snowy Mountains Scheme. The highway bears the B72 shield along its entire length. The highway originally bore the name Monaro Highway until 1958, when it received its current name. It originally ran from to Wagga Wagga but has been shortened to run from Princes Highway to Hume Highway instead. Part of the roadway was reallocated to what is now known as Monaro Highway in 1955. The Adelong Creek, a perennial river that is part of the Murrumbidgee catchment within the Murray–Darling basin, is located in the South West Slopes, and Riverina regions of New South Wales, Australia. Hillas Hut
Hillas Hut is a heritage-listed historic hut at Hillas Creek, Adelong, Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council, New South Wales, Australia. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History Hillas Hut is a timber slab hut on Yabtree Station dating from prior to 1835. It was built from local materials. James Hillas, the son of owner John Hillas, was murdered in the hut in 1835. It was used as a blacksmith's workshop after 1859. It forms part of the Yabtree Farm complex today. During the Australian gold rushes, starting in 1851, significant numbers of workers moved from elsewhere in Australia and overseas to where gold had been discovered.
