The Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) ( English: ''Brazilian Academy of Letters'') is a Brazilian literature, literary non-profit society established at the end of the 19th century. The first president, Machado de Assis, declared its foundation on Tuesday, 15 December 1896, with the by-laws being passed on Thursday, 28 January 1897. On Tuesday, 20 July of the same year, the academy started its operation. According to its statutes, it is the pre-eminent Portuguese council for matters pertaining to the Portuguese language. The ABL is considered the foremost institution devoted to the Portuguese language in Brazil. Deolindo Couto
Deolindo Augusto de Nunes Couto (1902-1992) was a Brazilian neurologist, professor and essayist. He was born in Teresina, Piaui, on March 11, 1902, and died in Rio de Janeiro on May 29, 1992. He was the son of Henrique José Couto and Maria Nazaré de Nunes Couto. He went to school in Teresina and São Luís do Maranhão. He received his doctorate in medicine from the National Faculty of Medicine of the University of Brazil. He occupied many important roles as a professor and practitioner of Clinical Neurology, in which he took higher training in Paris and Berlin. He was the founder and director of the Institute of Neurology at the University of Brazil, which today is called the Deolindo Couto Institute of Neurology. João Neves da Fontoura was a Brazilian lawyer, diplomat and politician. He was born in Cachoeira do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, on 16 November 1887 and died in Rio de Janeiro on 31 March 1963. Biography Fontoura was the son of colonel Isidoro Neves da Fontoura and Adalgisa Godoy da Fontoura. He studied at the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Gymnasium in São Leopoldo. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Law of Porto Alegre. He then served as Public Prosecutor of Porto Alegre for one year; as mayor of Cachoeira do Sul from 1925 to 1928; as state deputy from 1921 to 1928; and as vice president of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, elected in 1927. He was federal deputy for the same state, from 1928 to 1930 and from 1935 to 1937. Miguel Osório de Almeida (September 1, 1890 – December 2, 1952, both in Rio de Janeiro) was a noted Brazilian physician and scientist, brother of another scientist, Álvaro Osório de Almeida, both considered the ''fathers'' of modern physiology in Brazil. He studied medicine at the Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro which presently is part of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He was the chairman of physiology of the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine of Rio de Janeiro and of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, the dean of the Universidade do Rio de Janeiro and member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
