Adelino Fontoura
Adelino Fontoura Chaves (March 30, 1859 – May 2, 1884) was a Brazilian poet, actor and journalist. He is the patron of the 1st chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Life Adelino Fontoura was born in the city of Axixá, in Maranhão, to Antônio Fontoura Chaves and Francisca Dias Fontoura. Since as a child, he would have a very strong friendship with future author Artur Azevedo. Moving to Recife, he would work at the satirical journal ''Os Xênios''. Returning to Maranhão, he initiated his artistical career, performing in a play that would make him arrested. After this incident, he moved to Rio de Janeiro. He tried the artistic and the journalistic career, failing in the first one. He wrote for journals ''Folha Nova'', ''O Combate'' and ''A Gazetinha'', where he published some poems and works in prose — and, in this last one, he would collaborate once more with Azevedo, who was its founder. Adelino José Martins Batista (born 30 August 1971), known as Jordão, is a Portuguese former footballer who played as a defensive midfielder. Club career Born in Malanje, Portuguese Angola, Jordão made his professional debut in 1990 for Lisbon-based C.F. Estrela da Amadora, but it took several years for him to become an important first-team member, also being loaned twice, to S.C. Adelino William Gonsalves (August 10, 1908 – July 17, 1977) was an American soccer player, sometimes described as the "Babe Ruth of American Soccer". He spent over 25 years playing in various American professional leagues and was a member of the U.S. squad at the FIFA World Cup in 1930 and 1934. He is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Youth Gonsalves spent his early years in Fall River, Massachusetts. He was the seventh of nine children born to Augustine and Rose Gonsalves (who had immigrated from Portugal two years before his birth). An excellent athlete, Gonsalves boxed and played both baseball and soccer as a boy. When he was fourteen, Gonsalves began playing for Pioneer, a local amateur team.
