Adar House
The Adar House is a historic house outside Sulphur Springs, Benton County, Arkansas. It is located about northwest of the city, south of Arkansas Highway 59. Description and history It is a two-story American Foursquare house with Classical Revival detailing, including a wraparound porch supported by Classical columns with an entablature, and a modillioned cornice under the roof. Built in 1897, it is a somewhat flamboyant expression of late Victorian styles for a rural setting. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 25, 1988. Sulphur Springs is a city in Benton County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northwest Arkansas region. History Sulphur Springs got its start in 1885 as a mineral spa resort. Geography Sulphur Springs is located in northwest Benton County. Arkansas Highway 59 is a north–south state highway in Northwest Arkansas. The route runs from Arkansas Highway 22 in Barling north to the Missouri state line through Van Buren, the county seat of Crawford County. Highway 59 parallels US 59 (in Oklahoma) between Siloam Springs and Fort Smith. Since US 59 goes through Arkansas, AR 59 is the only Arkansas state highway to share its numbering with a federal highway that goes through Arkansas. Route description The route begins in Barling at AR 22. The route runs north to enter Van Buren, crossing I-540 and briefly concurring with US 64. The concurrency begins near the Joseph Starr Dunham House and before crossing Interstate 40. The American Foursquare or American Four Square is an American house style popular from the mid-1890s to the late 1930s. A reaction to the ornate and mass-produced elements of the Victorian architecture, Victorian and other Revival styles popular throughout the last half of the 19th century, the American Foursquare was plain, often incorporating handcrafted "honest" woodwork (unless purchased from a mail-order catalog). This style incorporates elements of the Prairie School and the American Craftsman, Craftsman styles. It is also sometimes called Transitional Period.
