Adam Wierman
Adam Wierman is Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology. He is known for his work on scheduling (computing), heavy tails, green computing, queueing theory, and algorithmic game theory. Academic biography Wierman studied at Carnegie Mellon University, where he completed his BS in Computer Science and Mathematics in 2001 and his MS and PhD degrees in Computer Science in 2004 and 2007. Queueing Theory
Queueing theory is the mathematical study of waiting lines, or queues. A queueing model is constructed so that queue lengths and waiting time can be predicted. Queueing theory is generally considered a branch of operations research because the results are often used when making business decisions about the resources needed to provide a service. Heavy Tails
In probability theory, heavy-tailed distributions are probability distributions whose tails are not exponentially bounded: that is, they have heavier tails than the exponential distribution. In many applications it is the right tail of the distribution that is of interest, but a distribution may have a heavy left tail, or both tails may be heavy. There are three important subclasses of heavy-tailed distributions: the fat-tailed distributions, the long-tailed distributions and the subexponential distributions.
