New Zealand Portrait Gallery
The New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pūkenga Whakaata is an art gallery located in Wellington, New Zealand, in the Waterfront Shed 11 building. History The gallery was registered as a charitable trust in 1990. In 2005 the board hired its first paid director, Avenal McKinnon, who held the position until her resignation in 2014. During this time the permanent collection grew from six works to more than 200. In 2014, Gaelen Macdonald was appointed as McKinnon's successor. In 2017, Jaenine Parkinson took over the role of director. Location The New Zealand Portrait Gallery's permanent home and exhibition space is in Shed 11, a heritage listed building located on Wellington's Queens Wharf. Shed 11 was built in 1904–5 and designed by William Ferguson, chief engineer of the Wellington Harbour Board. Sacha Lees
Sacha Lees (born 1977) is a New Zealand artist, working primarily in oil painting in the genres of portraiture and fantastic art. In 2020 she was awarded the Adam Portraiture Award, New Zealand's premier portrait prize. Lees also works as a freelance commercial artist. Training and career Lees was born in Greymouth and grew up in Kumara, on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. Her early training in art, figure drawing and visual communication took place in Christchurch at Hagley Community College and Christchurch Polytechnic. Between 1997 and 2004 she worked at Weta Workshop in Wellington as a creature designer, model maker, sculptor and artist on Sir Peter Jackson's ''Lord of the Rings'' film trilogy and designed some of the commercial merchandise for the productions. Her hands (in make-up) also 'acted' the part of Gollum's hands in a scene in ''The Fellowship of the Ring'' where Gollum is tortured. Irene Ferguson
Irene Ferguson (born 1970 in Hokitika, New Zealand) is an artist best known for her portrait paintings. Ferguson was awarded the New Zealand Portraiture Award in 2008. Training and Experience Ferguson gained a Diploma of Fine Arts with Honors from Otago School of Fine Art, Dunedin in 1993 and a Master of Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Art in 2005. From 2005 to 2006 Irene lived and worked in New York City. In 2010 she travelled to Italy to complete training in portraiture at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy. Fellowships and residencies In 2002 Ferguson was awarded the William Hodges Fellowship residency by the Southland Art Foundation. In 2008 Ferguson was the Artist in Residence at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, Wellington. Marianne Muggeridge
Marianne Muggeridge (born 1952) is a New Zealand painter and screenprinter based in Taranaki. She is best known for portraits of notable New Zealanders, cityscapes and landscapes. Early life Muggeridge was born in Hamilton, New Zealand in 1952.
