Adam Arndtsen
Adam Frederik Oluf Arndtsen (15 December 1829 – 7 August 1919) was a Norwegian professor and physicist. Biography Arndtsen was born at Alstahaug in Nordland, Norway. He was the son of Ole Arndtsen (1786-1846) and Wilhelmina Castberg (1788-1853). He studied at the University of Oslo, Royal Frederick University (now University of Oslo) earning his cand.med. in 1849. In 1854, he took a job as a physics teacher at the Norwegian Military Academy. In 1859 he lost out to Hartvig Caspar Christie (physicist), Hartvig Caspar Christie in a competition to succeed Lorentz Christian Langberg as an academic of physics at Royal Frederick University. In 1857, a scholarship brought him abroad to train with Wilhelm Eduard Weber (1804-1891) at Georg-August-Universität of Göttingen and Émile Verdet at the École normale supérieure in Paris. Alstahaug
Alstahaug is a List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Nordland Counties of Norway, county, Norway. It is part of the Helgeland Districts of Norway, region. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Sandnessjøen. Some of the villages in Alstahaug include Søvika and Tjøtta. Most residents of Alstahaug live in the town of Sandnessjøen which is situated on the island of Alsta. The characteristic De syv søstre, Seven Sisters mountain range is found on the eastern part of the island. Local legend has made this chain of peaks into seven sisters, two adjacent peaks representing twin sisters. Oslo University Hospital, Rikshospitalet is one of the four main campuses of Oslo University Hospital in Oslo, Norway. It was an independent hospital, ''Rigshospitalet'', later spelled ''Rikshospitalet'' ("The National Hospital"), from 1826 to 2009, when it merged with other university hospitals in Oslo. Daniel Isaachsen (physicist)
Daniel Isaachsen (23 June 1859 – 29 March 1940) was a Norwegian physicist. He was born in London as the son of military officer Isak Tobias Isaachsen and Fredrikke Andrea Rude. He was a great-grandson of Isaach Isaachsen, brother of scientist Haakon Isaachsen and scientist Isak Isaachsen, nephew of painter Olaf Isaachsen and cousin of painter Herman Willoch and naval officer Odd Isaachsen Willoch. In 1861 he married Asta Lie, a daughter of Jonas Lie. He finished his education in 1877 and graduated from university with the cand.real. degree in 1883. He started his career as an assistant at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, where he stayed from 1889, interrupted by a period in Berlin from 1886 to 1887. He was hired as a research fellow at the Royal Frederick University in 1889, and from 1891 he worked as a teacher and lecturer. Christopher Hansteen
Christopher Hansteen (26 September 1784 – 11 April 1873) was a Norwegian geophysicist, astronomer and physicist, best known for his mapping of Earth's magnetic field. Early life and career Hansteen was born in Christiania as the son of Johannes Mathias Hansteen (1744–1792) and his wife Anne Cathrine Treschow (1754–1829). He was the younger brother of writer Conradine Birgitte Dunker, and through her the uncle of Bernhard Dunker and Vilhelmine Ullmann, and granduncle of Mathilde Schjøtt, Ragna Nielsen and Viggo Ullmann. His mother was a first cousin of Niels Treschow. The intention was for Hansteen to become a naval officer, but since his father died when Hansteen was young, this plan did not materialize.
