Ada Maddocks
Ada Maddocks (22 September 1927–7 March 2007) was a British trade union official. Born in Felixstowe, Maddocks grew up in Walthamstow and was educated at Walthamstow High School before working in a laboratory for the Co-operative Wholesale Society. She became active in the co-operative movement, then began working for the National and Local Government Officers Association in 1961. In 1976, she assumed lead responsibility for health service employees in the union, and was elected to one of two women-only seats on the General Council of the Trades Union Congress. She was awarded an OBE in 1982, and served as President of the Trades Union Congress in 1990, actively supporting the ambulance workers' strike. Elizabeth Conway Symons, Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean (born 14 April 1951) is a British politician and trade unionist. Garfield Davies
David Garfield Davies, Baron Davies of Coity, (24 June 1935 – 4 March 2019 ) was a Labour Co-operative peer in the House of Lords and a former trade union leader. Biography Davies left school at 15 and worked as an electrician, serving in the Royal Air Force 1956–58. In 1969 he became a full-time trade union official with USDAW and rose through the ranks, becoming General Secretary of the union in 1986. He retired in 1997. Davies was named CBE in 1996 and created a life peer as Baron Davies of Coity, ''of Penybont in the County of Mid Glamorgan'' on 1 October 1997. Alexander Smith (6 February 1930 – July 2021) was a British trade unionist. Smith studied with the Clothing Institute in 1958, before becoming prominent in the National Union of Tailors and Garment Workers (NUTGW). Early life The son of George and Helen Christopher, he was educated at Cheltenham Grammar School and at the Westminster College of Commerce. Between 1941 and 1944, Christopher worked first as articled pupil then as agricultural valuers in Gloucester.
