Ada Annie Watney
Ada Annie Watney (née Nunn, later Weguelin) (1868-1938) was a founding member and committee member in the Ladies' Automobile Club (as Mrs Bernard Weguelin). It was reported in 1904 that she had driven nearly 60,000 miles in six years. Early life Ada Nunn was born in 1868 to an English father and a Portuguese mother. Marriages On 15 August 1889 at St Luke's Church, London, Ada Annie Nunn aged 21, "reputed to be a former ballet-dancer" had married 19-year-old Sherman Martin, the eldest son of the banker and socialite Bradley Martin, but when his parents found out some weeks later, they were "overwhelmed with mortification", and Ada was offered $10,00 to divorce. Martin was eventually welcomed home, went on a world tour, and his sister Cornelia Martin married William Craven, 4th Earl of Craven. High Elms Manor
High Elms Manor is a grade II listed Georgian country house located near Garston in Hertfordshire, England. It was built around 1812, and was originally known as "High Elms", but from the 1890s to 2010 it was called Garston Manor. In the post-World War II years the house was a rehabilitation centre, but it later fell derelict. In the 1990s an American named Sheila O'Neill bought and restored it and it was used by her as a Montessori School until her death, and then subsequently by her daughters, who have now put it on the market. Augustus and Mary Ann Cavendish Bradshaw Augustus Cavendish Bradshaw was the originator of High Elms. He appears to have purchased the estate in the early 1800s and either built High Elms or made very substantial alterations to a small existing building. Hambledon is a rural scattered village in the Waverley borough of Surrey, situated south of Guildford. Bradley Martin (December 18, 1841 – February 5, 1913) was an American socialite known for giving the Bradley-Martin costume ball at the Waldorf Hotel in New York City on the night of February 10, 1897. Early life Martin was born on December 18, 1841, in Albany, New York. He was the son of Henry Hull Martin (1809–1886) and Anna Townsend Martin (1815–1866). Watney Combe & Reid was a leading brewery in London. At its peak in the 1930s it was a constituent of the FT 30 index of leading companies on the London Stock Exchange. It produced Watney's Red Barrel. History The Watney family were the main partners in the Stag Brewery, Victoria, for much of the 19th century. In 1837 James Watney became a partner in the brewery, followed by his sons James and Norman in 1856. On his death in 1884, the brewery became a private limited company. In 1889 James Watney & Co., acquired the Mortlake Brewery (latterly referred to as the Stag Brewery of Mortlake), which had been owned by Charles James Philips and James Wigan since the 1840s. Claude Watney
Claude Watney (4 November 18667 November 1919) was a British brewery director and motor dealer. He was member of the Watney family of brewers, director of the brewing firm Watney Combe & Reid, and a motor dealer and enthusiast. In 1903 he had a showroom in London selling Panhard and Mercedes motor cars. He owned a Pipe vehicle, and his wife Ada was also an enthusiastic motorist.
