Barry Ackerley
Barry Allan Ackerley (April 15, 1934 – March 21, 2011) was an American businessman. He was the former chairman and CEO of the Ackerley Group media company. He was also the owner of the Seattle SuperSonics basketball franchise from 1983 to 2001 and the Seattle Storm basketball franchise from 2000 to 2001. History Born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1934, Barry Ackerley began his career in the advertising industry selling space for the magazine Better Homes & Gardens. In 1964, he approached a wealthy family in Wichita, Kansas, and asked for their financial assistance in acquiring billboards. The family agreed and, as a minority shareholder in the venture, Ackerley purchased billboards in Fresno and Bakersfield, California. Over the next four years, Ackerley purchased additional billboards in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose, California. Stan Ackerley
Stan Ackerley (born 12 July 1942 in Manchester, Lancashire, England) is an Australian former footballer and coach. Playing career Club career Ackerley spent two seasons on the books of Manchester United from 1959 until 1961 where he played in the youth team. During the 1961–62 season he played two matches for Oldham Athletic before joining Kidderminster Harriers later in the season. In 1962 he signed for Altrincham, playing 17 matches during the 1962–63 season. In 1963 Ackerley immigrated to Australia where he joined Slavia in the Victorian State League. The following year he moved to the NSW State League where he turned out for APIA on a $4,500 fee. Apart from a short stint back in England for Witton Albion, he played at APIA until 1970. The Ackerley Group was an American media company owned by Barry Ackerley that owned several television stations (mainly in New York, California, as well as one in Fairbanks) that was sold to Clear Channel Communications in 2001. In addition to ownership of television stations across the country, the company also owned and operated several radio stations in the Seattle, WA market. The company also owned the NBA Seattle SuperSonics and WNBA Seattle Storm professional basketball teams. Paul Ackerley
Paul Douglas Ackerley (16 May 1949 – 3 May 2011) was a field hockey player, maths teacher and public servant from New Zealand. He played field hockey at right half. He was a member of the national team that won the gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He was selected for the 1980 Summer Olympics, but most sports in New Zealand boycotted the Moscow games so he did not compete. He had 25 international caps for New Zealand. Ackerley was born in Dunedin but grew up in Ashburton. He graduated from the University of Canterbury, where he played in the Canterbury University hockey club in the late 1960s.
