Achille Glisenti
Achille Glisenti (October 1, 1848 – December 21, 1906) was an Italian painter, mostly of elegant genre and Orientalist subjects. Biography He was born in Brescia and had his first training there under Luigi Campini. He then studied at the Brera Academy of Milan under Eleuterio Pagliano. In 1866 he fought with Garibaldi in the Third Italian War of Independence. He then traveled to Munich in Germany, where he made contact with former members of the Academy of Vienna who often painted in non-conventional styles, including Wilhelm von Dietz of the Munich School, Arnold Böcklin, and Richard Zimmermann Richard Augustus Zimmermann, genre and landscape painter, was born in Zittau in 1820. Richard Augustus Zimmermann, genre and landscape painter, was born in Zittau in 1820. Biography Zimmermann was the son of the impresario Karl Friedrich August Zimmermann, and his three brothers, Albert, Max, and Robert, have all been well-known painters. He was a pupil of the first, and in 1838 followed him to Munich, devoting himself, in opposition to his advice, to landscape painting instead of history. The change, however, proved successful, and his winter landscapes, forest and mountain views, village sketches, and sea pieces became popular. In his later period he adopted the style of Berchem. Arnold Böcklin
Arnold Böcklin (16 October 182716 January 1901) was a Swiss symbolist painter. Biography He was born in Basel. His father, Christian Frederick Böcklin (b. 1802), was descended from an old family of Schaffhausen, and engaged in the silk trade. His mother, Ursula Lippe, was a native of the same city. Arnold studied at the Düsseldorf academy under Schirmer, and became a friend of Anselm Feuerbach. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Schirmer, who recognized in him a student of exceptional promise, sent him to Antwerp and Brussels, where he copied the works of Flemish and Dutch masters. Böcklin then went to Paris, worked at the Louvre, and painted several landscapes. After serving his time in the army, Böcklin set out for Rome in March 1850. Genre painting (or petit genre), a form of genre art, depicts aspects of everyday life by portraying ordinary people engaged in common activities. One common definition of a genre scene is that it shows figures to whom no identity can be attached either individually or collectively, thus distinguishing it from history paintings (also called ''grand genre'') and portraits.
