Acer Traini
''Acer traini'' is an extinct maple species in the family Sapindaceae described from isolated fossil samara (fruit), samaras. The species was described from Miocene-aged fossils found in Canada and the United States of America. It is one of several extinct species placed in the living Section (botany), section ''List of Acer species, Glabra''. History and classification ''Acer traini'' is represented by a group of fossil specimens from a number of different geologic deposits in western North America. The northernmost fossils have been reported from the Early Miocene Chilcotin Group, Chilcotin River flora of Central British Columbia. Two localities in Oregon have produced fossils of the species. The White Hills site of the Mascall Formation in Northeast Central Oregon and the Trout Creek flora of southeastern Oregon while the Trapper Creek flora found in southern central Idaho is the furthest east locality for the species. The Miocene ( ) is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about (Ma). The Miocene was named by Scottish geologist Charles Lyell; the name comes from the Greek words (', "less") and (', "new") and means "less recent" because it has 18% fewer modern marine invertebrates than the Pliocene has. The Miocene is preceded by the Oligocene and is followed by the Pliocene. As Earth went from the Oligocene through the Miocene and into the Pliocene, the climate slowly cooled towards a series of ice ages. The Miocene boundaries are not marked by a single distinct global event but consist rather of regionally defined boundaries between the warmer Oligocene and the cooler Pliocene Epoch.
