Aceituna Campaign
The Aceituna Campaign took place during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. In December 1936, the Nationalists launched an offensive in order to occupy the town of Andújar. The Nationalists occupied and defeated the Republican Army at Lopera, but failed to occupy Andújar. Background In December 1936, Queipo de Llano started an offensive in the Córdoba province in order to capture the rich olive-growing area of Andújar, and to relieve the besieged civil guards of the Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza's sanctuary. The offensive The Nationalist launched their offensive on 13 December, with 2,000 requetes and moorish troops (later 4,000). On 20 December, the Nationalist occupied the town of Bujalance, on 22 December Pedro Abad and Villafranca. El Carpio
El Carpio is a city located in the province of Córdoba, Spain. According to the 2006 census (INE), the city has a population of 4,477 inhabitants. History El Carpio was tied to the Kingdom of Castile as early as the 1300s when the Señorio del Castillo de Carpio was founded in 1325 by Garcí Méndez II de Sotomayor. The Señorio del Castillo de Carpio was elevated to the level of the Marquesado del Carpio granted by King Philip II of Spain in 1559. Porcuna
Porcuna is a village and municipality in the province of Jaén in Andalusia, Spain, 42 km from Jaén and 50 km from Córdoba. The primary occupation of the 6,990 inhabitants is olive growing. The Battle of Lopera took place between 27 and 29 December 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. This battle took place during the Nationalist's Aceituna offensive. On 27 December, the XIV International Brigade launched an attack in order to occupy the Nationalist-held town of Lopera, but the attack failed after two days and the Brigade suffered appalling casualties.
