Accent On Youth (TV Series)
''Accent on Youth'' was an Australian music variety television series that aired briefly on the Nine Network in 1958, from 25 January to around October, on Sydney station TCN-9. It evolved into a new series titled ''Bandstand A bandstand (sometimes music kiosk) is a circular, semicircular or polygonal structure set in a park, garden, pier, or indoor space, designed to accommodate musical bands performing concerts. Originally presented by John Godson, it quickly acquired TV news anchor Brian Henderson as new host. TCN is the flagship television station of the Nine Network in Australia. The station is currently located at 1 Denison Street, North Sydney. The licence, issued to a company named Television Corporation Ltd headed by Sir Frank Packer, was one of the first four licences (two in Sydney, two in Melbourne) to be issued for commercial television stations in Australia. TCN-9 is the home of the NRL coverage and national-level Nine News bulletins. History TCN began broadcasting on 16 September 1956, and became the first station in Australia to begin regular transmissions. Test broadcasts, initially consisting of a test slide and later documentaries and dramas, had commenced two months earlier on 13 July 1956. Brian Weir Henderson (15 September 19315 August 2021) was a New Zealand-born Australian radio and television personality and pioneer known for his association with the Nine Network as a television news anchor in Sydney, as well as a variety show presenter and host of music program ''Bandstand'', the local version of the US music program ''American Bandstand''. Henderson, who started his career in radio, went on to become a long-serving Australian newsreader for 45 years, having presented the New South Wales weekly bulletin, based in Sydney at TCN-9 from 14 January 1957 until retiring on 13 December 2002. ''American Bandstand'', abbreviated ''AB'', is an American music-performance and dance television program that aired in various versions from 1952 to 1989, and was hosted from 1956 until its final season by Dick Clark, who also served as the program's producer. It featured teenagers dancing to Top 40 music introduced by Clark; at least one popular musical act—over the decades, running the gamut from Jerry Lee Lewis to Run–D.M.C.—usually appeared in person to lip-sync one of their latest singles. Freddy Cannon holds the record for most appearances, at 110. ''TV Disc Jockey'' was an early Australian television music program which is notable as it later evolved to become the Australian version of ''Bandstand''. It aired on the Nine Network's TCN-9 from June 1957 to February 1958. The series originally consisted of host John Godson playing records (with the visual consisting of the record going round), later a live band joined and then the series began to accompany the records by inviting young people into the studio to dance to the music.
