Acatenango (horse)
Acatenango (1982–2005) was a German Thoroughbred racehorse. Sired by the Deutsches Derby winner and German Champion sire, Surumu, he was out of the English mare Aggravate. Acatenango's ancestry includes German Champion sire Dark Ronald, the French Champion sire, Tantieme, English Triple Crown champion Gainsborough, and the most influential Italian sire, Nearco. Racing in 1984 at age two, Acatenango's best finish was a third in the Ratibor-Rennen at Krefeld. In 1985 he embarked on a thirteen-race winning streak that tied a European record held by Ardross and Brigadier Gerard. Included in his wins was the Grosser Bavaria Preis, a listed race at Munich Racecourse and the important Group One Aral-Pokal at the Gelsenkirchen Racecourse in Gelsenkirchen. Surumu
Surumu (26 February 1974 – 3 November 1999) was a German Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Surumu, a Chestnut (coat), chestnut, was foaled in 1974 at Andreas Jacobs, the Jacobs family's Gestüt Fährhof near Bremen. He was from the Dark Ronald male line. His sire was Literat and his dam was Surama by Reliance II. Literat was a German 2000 Guineas winner, who, as a hot favourite and ridden by Lester Piggott, broke down in the Deutsches Derby, nevertheless finishing 5th in that race. Racing career At three Surumu won both Union-Rennen, the Union Rennen (Grade 2) and Deutsches Derby, the Deutsches Derby (Grade 1). Total earning of Surumu was Euro, € 192.507. Nearco
Nearco (January 24, 1935 – June 27, 1957) was an Italian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse described by ''Thoroughbred Heritage'' as "one of the greatest racehorses of the Twentieth Century" and "one of the most important sires of the century." He was unbeaten, winning 14 races at distances from 1000m (5 furlongs) to 3000m (1 mile 7 furlongs), including the Derby Italiano and Grand Prix de Paris. He was then sold for a record amount to Martin H. Benson and stood stud in England, where he became the patriarch of several of the most dominant sire lines in Thoroughbred history. Breeding Nearco was bred in Italy by Federico Tesio, who also bred several other champions including the undefeated Ribot. Gainsborough (1915–1945) was a British bred Thoroughbred racehorse who won the English Triple Crown in 1918 and became a superior sire. Background Gainsborough was a bay horse bred by his owner Lady James Douglas (1854–1941). The colt was named after the town of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire because his owner liked the sound of the name. Tantieme
Tantième (1947–1966) was a French Thoroughbred horse racing champion and prominent sire who twice won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, France's most prestigious horse race. He also won several other important conditions races including the Grand Critérium in 1949, the Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Prix Lupin and his first Arc de Triomphe in 1950. Racing as a four-year-old, in 1951 Tantième won the Prix Ganay plus his second Arc de Triomphe and in England he captured the Coronation Cup. After winning twelve of his fifteen races, Tantième was retired to stand at stud at François Dupré's Haras d'Ouilly where he became the Champion French Sire of 1962 and 1965. Dark Ronald
Dark Ronald was an English bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire with a global influence on the breeding of Thoroughbreds and sport horses, with many show jumpers tracing back to him. Breeding The sire of Dark Ronald, Bay Ronald, was a moderate handicap racehorse and a useful sire. He produced two other notable sons: Bayardo and Macdonald II. Bayardo went on to be one of the greatest runners of his time, and a sire of two English Triple Crown winners. Macdonald II was a very successful runner in France. Bay Ronald also sired the filly Rondeau, the dam of the very significant sire Teddy (that sired, among others, Athelstan, Ortello, Sir Gallahad III, Case Ace, and Sun Teddy).
