Acarigua
Acarigua (), founded as San Miguel de Acarigua, is a city in northwestern Venezuela, in the northern part of the state of Portuguesa. Formerly the state capital, it is a major commercial center for the northern Llanos region of South America. It is contiguous with the neighboring city of Araure. Demographics The city's population was 116,551 in 1990 and was estimated at 208,495 in 2008. Religion Its Cathedral ''Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Corteza'' is the episcopal see of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Acarigua–Araure. 2019 Portuguesa, Venezuela Prison Uprising
A group of inmates were involved in a prison riot on 24 May 2019 in the police station cellblocks in Acarigua, Portuguesa (state), Portuguesa state, Venezuela. The riot allegedly began when inmate Wilfredo Ramos was killed following ten days of protests against the denial of visits by relatives. Background Prisons in Venezuela are largely overpopulated; many prisons are supposedly under gang control and subject to violence. However, the prison of this uprising was actually the holding cells of the police headquarters at Centro de Coordinación Policial José Antonio Páez (PoliPáez). A police document accessed by Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported that the prison cells were designed to hold 60 prisoners, but actually held about 500. Nobody is meant to be held in the cells for more than 48 hours, but many have been there much longer. Portuguesa Fútbol Club, usually known simply as Portuguesa, is a Venezuelan football (soccer), football club based in Acarigua. History The club was founded on April 10, 1972, in Acarigua in the northern part of the state of Portuguesa. Rivalries Classic Añejo The encounter between Portuguesa and Estudiantes de Mérida is one of the most classic and oldest of Venezuelan football. Luis Herrera Campins
Luis Antonio Herrera Campins (4 May 1925 – 9 November 2007) was the president of Venezuela from 1979 to 1984. He was elected to one five-year term in 1978. He was a member of COPEI, a Christian Democratic party. Early life and career Luis Antonio Herrera Campins was born in Acarigua, Portuguesa (state), Portuguesa. He studied law initially at Central University of Venezuela, though his studies were interrupted when he was imprisoned during the regime of Marcos Pérez Jiménez after he organized a strike against the dictator. He continued his studies and writings in exile in Spain and Germany. He eventually earned his law degree in 1955 from the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela. Herrera entered politics in 1937, and from 1959 to 1979 he served in the National Congress. He became President of Venezuela on 12 March 1979. The Estadio General José Antonio Páez is a sports infrastructure stadium in Acarígua, Venezuela. It is currently used mostly for football (soccer), football matches and is the home stadium of Portuguesa Fútbol Club the building was built in that place by the booming development of this locality llanera; owes its name to the recognized hero of Venezuelan independence and the first president of Venezuela, Jose Antonio Páez. It is the headquarters of the Portuguese Football Club, currently located in the First Division of Venezuela. Llanos
The Llanos (Spanish ''Los Llanos'', "The Plains"; ) is a vast tropical grassland plain situated to the east of the Andes in Colombia and Venezuela, in northwestern South America. It is an ecoregion of the tropical and subtropical grasslands, savannas, and shrublands biome. Geography The Llanos occupy a lowland that extends mostly east and west. The Llanos are bounded on the west and northwest by the Andes, and on the north by the Venezuelan Coastal Range. The Guiana Highlands are to the southeast, and the Negro-Branco moist forests are to the southwest. To the east the Orinoco wetlands and Orinoco Delta swamp forests occupy the Orinoco Delta. The Llanos' main river is the Orinoco, which runs from west to east through the ecoregion and forms part of the border between Colombia and Venezuela.
