Spalding Institute
Academy of Our Lady and Spalding Institute were Catholic school, Catholic high schools across the street from each other in downtown Peoria, Illinois. The Academy (AOL), a girls' school, traced its lineage back to 1863. The Spalding Institute (SI), the boys' school, was founded in 1899 by the Franciscan Brothers of Mountbellew#Franciscan Brothers, Mountbellew, Ireland, at the invitation of John Lancaster Spalding, the first Roman Catholic Diocese of Peoria, Bishop of Peoria. It was one of the communities which left that religious congregation to split off and become part of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis of Penance, based in Rome, Italy. The schools merged into one co-educational school, Academy of Our Lady/Spalding Institute in 1973. Harold Albert "Pete" Vonachen, Jr. (August 31, 1925 – June 10, 2013) was an American businessman and Minor league baseball team owner. Born in Peoria, Illinois, he was often dubbed "Peoria's Mr. Baseball, although this was usually only done for press consumption. Early life Vonachen was a Spalding Institute graduate in 1943 and earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Bradley University in 1949. In the interim, he served in the United States Navy from December 1943 through May 1946. An avid sports enthusiast and premiere restaurateur, Vonachen saved professional baseball for Peoria when he purchased the town's Class-A Midwest League franchise after the 1983 season, turning it into a model for the nation. Jim Ardis (born May 25, 1959) is an American corporate executive and politician who served as mayor of Peoria, Illinois from 2005 to 2021. Prior to becoming mayor, he had previously served on the Peoria City Council from 1999 through 2005. Ardis is the second-longest serving mayor in city history behind Edward Nelson Woodruff. Joseph Elliott Girardi (born October 14, 1964) is an American former professional baseball player and manager in Major League Baseball (MLB). Girardi played the catcher position for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees, and St. Louis Cardinals during a big league playing career that spanned from 1989 to 2003.
