Abtao Island
Abtao Island (''Isla de Abtao'') is part of the Chiloé Archipelago, Chile. During the Chincha Islands War, the Battle of Abtao took place near the island on 7 February 1866. Geography The island is volcanic, lying northwest-southeast off the east coast of the Challahue peninsula. It is about five kilometers long and averages about 800 meters in width. At its northwest end it terminates at Punta Barranco to the north and Punta Lilihue to the west. At about the northern third the island thins, and there is a protected port, Puerto Abtao, on the western side. At its southwest end it terminates at Punta Quilque. Its southern half is relatively flat, rising slightly higher, 47 meters, to the north with a broken terrian. The island is partially forested. History At the time of the Spanish colonization of the Americas the island was the domain of the nomadic indigenous Chono people. The island's name "Abtao" is of Chono origin. The Battle of Abtao was a naval battle fought on February 7, 1866, during the Chincha Islands War, between a Spanish squadron and a combined Peruvian-Chilean fleet, at the island of Abtao in the Gulf of Ancud near Chiloé Archipelago in south-central Chile. Abtao-class Submarine
The ''Abtao'' class were four submarines of the Peruvian Navy that entered service between 1954 and 1957. They are also known as the ''Lobo'' class and the ''Dos de Mayo'' class and were constructed in the United States to a design based upon the United States Navy's . They were the last submarines to be constructed by the United States for the export market. All four submarines were powered by a diesel-electric system and armed with six torpedo tubes. Two of the submarines also mounted a /25 caliber gun. The four submarines, initially named for animals, were all renamed in 1957 for famous Peruvian battles. Beginning in 1991, the submarines were taken out of service, with the last decommissioned in 1999. One, , is a museum ship located in Lima, Peru. BAP ''Abtao'' (SS-42) is an of the Peruvian Navy. The vessel which was originally named BAP ''Tiburón'' ("Shark"), was constructed by the American Electric Boat company in the United States and launched in 1953. The ''Abtao'' class were the last submarines constructed by the United States for the export market. The submarine entered service in 1954 and by presidential decree, was renamed ''Abtao'' for the battle during the Chincha Islands War. Armed with six torpedo tubes and a /25 caliber gun, the submarine took part in the rescue of the crew of , another submarine that had sunk following a collision. The corvette ''Abtao'' was a wooden ship built in Scotland during 1864 of 1.600 tons and 800 IHP. She fought in the War of the Pacific and was in service for the Chilean Navy until 1922. __TOC__ Two hulls in Glasgow During the Chincha Islands War, the Chilean Government sent her agent in Belgium Manuel Carvallo to British shipyards in search of unsold warships originally laid down for the Confederate States Navy; He found in Glasgow and Greenock, on the River Clyde , the hulls of the 1600-ton commerce-raider ''Texas'' (not the ironclad ) and the 1200-ton ''Pampero''. In order to conceal the true owner of the ship and to elude the Foreign Enlistment Act, several names were used for the ships.
