Abrud
Abrud ( la, Abruttus;Ștefan Pascu: A History of Transylvania, Dorset Press, 1990, , hu, Abrudbánya; german: Großschlatten) is a town in the north-western part of Alba County, Transylvania, Romania, located on the river Abrud. It administers three villages: Abrud-Sat (''Abrudfalva''), Gura Cornei (''Szarvaspataktorka'') and Soharu (''Szuhár''). Population According to the census from 2011 there was a total population of 4,944 people living in this commune. Of this population, 96.66% are ethnic Romanians, 0.86% are ethnic Hungarians and 0.53% ethnic Romani. Name Although first recorded only in 1271 in the form ''terra Obruth'', the name of the town might have derived from a supposed (not attested) Dacian word for gold, ''*obrud''. The town's modern name reflects a characteristic vowel shift (from ''o'' to ''a'') of the medieval Hungarian language. Nick Stuart
Nick Stuart (April 10, 1904 – April 7, 1973) was an Austro-Hungarian-born American actor and bandleader. His career spanned five decades, during which he appeared in over 50 films, more than half of them features, as well as film shorts, serials, and even one television appearance. He rose to stardom in such films as '' Girls Gone Wild'' and '' Chasing Through Europe'', prior to expanding his business interests by creating a talent agency, and a popular upscale club in Hollywood. After being introduced to music by Guy Lombardo, he established his own band, "The Man with the Band from Movieland", which played for over twenty years. When he dissolved the band in 1961, he opened a haberdashery in Biloxi, Mississippi. He met his first wife, Sue Carol, while working on a film, and the two had a daughter, actress Carol Lee Ladd. Ioan Sterca-Șuluțiu
Ioan Sterca-Șuluțiu (1796–1858) was an ethnic Romanian bureaucrat in the administration of Imperial Austrian Transylvania, owner of gold mines at Abrud, and the brother of Greek-Catholic Metropolitan Alexandru Sterca-Șuluțiu. He was the father of the judge Dionisie Sterca-Şuluţiu and of the historian Iosif Sterca-Şuluţiu. Ioan Buteanu
Ioan Buteanu (1821–23 May 1849) was a leader of the Transylvanian Romanian Revolutionaries in 1848 and a prefect of Zaránd County between 1848 and 1849. Avram Iancu
Avram Iancu (; hu, Janku Ábrahám; 1824 – September 10, 1872) was a Transylvanian Romanian lawyer who played an important role in the local chapter of the Austrian Empire Revolutions of 1848–1849. Alexandru Sterca-Șuluțiu
Alexandru Sterca-Șuluțiu, also called Alexandru Sterca-Șuluțiu de Cărpiniș (February 15, 1794 – September 7, 1867), was an ethnic Romanian Eastern Catholic cleric in Imperial Austrian Transylvania, and the Metropolitan of the Transylvanian Greek Catholic Church. He was the brother of 1848 revolutionary commander Ioan Sterca-Șuluțiu. During his service the Diocese of Alba Iulia and Făgăraş (centred at Blaj) was removed from the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Esztergom (in Hungary) and became an ecclesiastic province in its own right, with the Dioceses of Oradea Mare, Gherla and Lugoj as suffragans (subordinate dioceses). Alexandru Ciura
Alexandru Ciura (15 November 1876 – 2 March 1936) was an Austro-Hungarian-born Romanian journalist, short story writer and priest. Born in Abrud, Ciura was descended from a long line of Greek-Catholic priests in the Țara Moților region of Transylvania; family members had fought in the 1848 revolution alongside Avram Iancu. After attending high school at Blaj and Sibiu, graduating in 1894, Ciura studied theology and philology at Budapest University from 1894 to 1902. He earned his degree in 1903 with a thesis on Mihai Eminescu and George Coșbuc. Ciura made his published debut with a serial that appeared in the Sibiu newspaper ''Tribuna'' in 1895. His first book, the 1903 ''Visuri trecute'', featured sketches and ephemera. He was the first editor-in-chief of the Budapest-based '' Luceafărul'' (1902-1903), contributing assiduously until its suppression in 1914. Antal Kagerbauer (born as Anton Kagerbauer; 5 July 1814 – 8 October 1872) was a Transylvanian Hungarian-German architect who worked in Cluj during the mid-nineteenth century.
