Abram Zaborov (Belarusian Абрам Забораў; 18 February 1911, :en:Liozna, Liozna, Vitebsk Region — 1985, Israel) — Soviet Belarusian and Israeli painter of Jewish descent, the member of the Union of Painters of the USSR, the father of famous French painter :en:Boris Zaborov, Boris Zaborov."Арт-календарь - 2015". The circumstances forced the family to leave :en:Liozna, Liozna and return to Abram's father's native town of :en:Velizh, Velizh. Lyozna ( be, Лёзна, Liozna; russian: Лиозно, Liozno; pl, Łoźna; german: Ljesno; yi, ליאזנע, Lyozne) is an urban-type settlement in Vitebsk Region, Belarus. It serves as the administrative center of Lyozna District. It is located close to the border with Russia by the Vitebsk- Smolensk railroad branch and highway, on the Moshna River. As of 2023, it has a population of 6,631. History The first known record of the Lyozna '' shtetl'' (small town with a high Jewish population) is dated 1654. In 1939, 711 Jews lived in the settlement, making up 17.3 percent of the population. During the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the settlement was captured on 16 July 1941 by V Army Corps of the 9th Army; it was part of Army Group Centre Rear Area. Lyozna was under German occupation until 8 October 1943. He moved to Paris, France in 1980 to begin a career in painting that resulted in numerous exhibitions and increasing recognition in European, American, and Russian art circles. Early life Zaborov was born in 1935 in Minsk to Abram Zaborov and Esfir Rappoport and, with his family, experienced the German invasion and occupation of Minsk in World War II. When his family returned to Minsk after the war, they found the city in ruins. In 1950 he enrolled in the Minsk Fine Arts School, leaving in 1953 for Leningrad and the entrance exams at the Academy of Fine Arts. Although he failed the exam, he was accepted the following year as a first year student.
