Abram M. Scott
Abram Marshall Scott (March 13, 1785June 12, 1833) was a National Republican Mississippi politician born in Edgefield County in the Province of South Carolina. He was an early settler of Wilkinson County, Mississippi and was instrumental in founding the town of Woodville, Mississippi. He held local political offices before his election to the Mississippi State Senate. Early life Abram Marshall Scott was born in 1785 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. He migrated to Wilkinson County, Mississippi early in his life, where he would serve as a tax collector. During the War of 1812, Scott served as a lieutenant in the 1st Mississippi Regiment of Volunteers. Political career Scott served as a delegate during Mississippi's Constitutional Convention of 1817, before serving in the state senate in 1822 and 1826–1827. 1833 Mississippi Gubernatorial Election
The 1833 Mississippi gubernatorial election was held on May 6, 1833, to elect the governor of Mississippi. Hiram Runnels, a Jacksonian democracy, Jacksonian Democrat won against incumbent Governor Abram M. Scott, Abram Scott, a Independent Republican (United States), National Republican. Background With the passing of the Mississippi Constitution of 1832, the legislature scheduled elections for May instead of November, the typical month for elections prior. This was done to facilitate the transtition from the old constitution to the new one. Results Despite Runnels winning the election in May, he was not inaugurated until November because of confusion of when his term began. During this confusion, Governor Scott died in June from cholera, resulting in Charles Lynch (politician), Charles Lynch, the senate president, to assume office.
