Abraham Stavans
Abraham Stavchansky Altschuler (1 January 1933 – 5 March 2019), known as Abraham Stavans, was a Mexican actor and theater director. He was known for his work in film, telenovelas, and other television series, including the Mexican sitcom, ''El Chavo del Ocho''. Stavans appeared in more than thirty telenovelas and forty-five plays and theater productions during his career. Biography Stavans was born Abraham Stavchansky Altschuler in 1933 in Mexico City to Jewish immigrants from the Pale of Settlement. After early schooling, he began studying theater in 1949 at the Instituto Andrés Soler of the National Association of Actors (ANDA). As a student, he studied under the noted theater directors, José de Jesús Aceves and Seki Sano. ''Original Sin'' is a 2001 erotic thriller film starring Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie. It is based on the novel ''Waltz into Darkness'' by Cornell Woolrich, and is a remake of the 1969 François Truffaut film '' Mississippi Mermaid''. The film was produced by actress Michelle Pfeiffer's production company, Via Rosa Productions. The history of the Jews in Mexico can be said to have begun in 1519 with the arrival of ''Conversos'', often called ''Marranos'' or “Crypto-Jews,” referring to those Jews forcibly converted to Catholicism and that then became subject to the Spanish Inquisition. Ilan Stavans (born Ilan Stavchansky on April 7, 1961) is a Mexican-American author and academic. He writes and speaks on American, Hispanic, and Jewish cultures. He is the author of ''Quixote'' (2015) and a contributor to the ''Norton Anthology of Latino Literature'' (2010). Life Ilan Stavans was born in Mexico in 1961 to a middle-class Jewish family; his father's ancestors had immigrated from the Russian Pale of Settlement. His parents were born in Mexico City. His father, Abraham Stavans, had become a Mexican telenovela actor. His mother, Ofelia Stavans, taught theater. After living in Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, Stavans immigrated to the United States in 1985. He earned a master's degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary and a Doctorate in Letters from Columbia University. He married Alison, and they had two sons, Joshua and Isaiah.
