Abraham Pandithar
Rao Sahib Abraham Pandithar (2 August 1859 – 31 August 1919) was a Tamil musicologist, composer, doctor and a traditional medicine practitioner from Sambavar Vadakarai of Tirunelveli District (Then Kollam district), who is celebrated for his patronage of numerous Tamil musicians and his influential studies concerning the origins and evolution of traditional Tamil music. Biography Abraham Pandithar was born in Sambavar Vadakarai near Surandai in Tirunelveli district to a Tamil Christian Nadar family, the son of Muthusamy Pandithar and Annammal of the Pandithar Maruthuvar caste. He studied at the CVES Normal Teachers Training School at Dindigal and in 1876, became a teacher in the same college. He belonged to a family of doctors and became interested in Siddha medicine. Sambavar Vadagarai
Sambavarvadakarai is a Panchayat town in the Tenkasi district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the north shore of the Hanumannathi River in Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu, Sambavarvadakarai is divided into two sections, Melur (upper town) and Keelur (lower town) corresponding to its location along the river. The name is a portmanteau of the Tamil words ''sambavar'' (a sub-caste), ''vada'' (north), and ''karai'' (shore). Ancient Tamil Music
The ancient Tamil music is the historical predecessor of the Carnatic music during the Sangam period spanning from 500 BCE to 200 CE. Many poems of the classical Sangam literature were set to music. There are various references to this ancient musical tradition found in the ancient Sangam books such as ''Ettuthokai'' and '' Pattupattu''. The early narrative poem ''Cilappatikaram'', belonging to the post-Sangam period (5th or 6th century) also mentions various forms of music practiced by the Tamil people.
