Abertillery Town F.C. was a Welsh football club based in Abertillery. History The club were formed prior to 1910, and initially played in the South Wales League until being elected to Division Two of the Southern League in 1913–14. Although they left the league at the end of the 1913–14 season, they rejoined after World War I. In 1920–21 they played in both the Welsh section of the Southern League and the Western League, finishing sixth in the Southern League and third in the Western League. Abertillery (; cy, Abertyleri) is a town and a community of the Ebbw Fach valley in the historic county of Monmouthshire, Wales. Following local government reorganisation it became part of the Blaenau Gwent County Borough administrative area. The surrounding landscape borders the Brecon Beacons National Park and the Blaenavon World heritage Site. Formerly a major coal mining centre the Abertillery area was transformed in the 1990s using EU and other funding to return to a greener environment. Situated on the A467 the town is north of the M4 and south of the A465 "Heads of the Valleys" trunk road. It is about by road from Cardiff and from Bristol. South Wales League
The South Wales League was a football league in South Wales. It ran between 1891 and 1911, closing down in September 1911 before the start of the planned 1911–12 season. History The league was formed in 1891. Treharris were the first champions after a disorganised first season which was concluded by the top three clubs playing off for the championship. The next three seasons were affected by unplayed matches; and at the completion of the 1893–94 season, the management committee announced the winding up of the league. The Southern League is a men's football competition featuring semi-professional clubs from the South and Midlands of England. Together with the Isthmian League and the Northern Premier League it forms levels seven and eight of the English football league system. Swindon Town won their second Southern League championship, whilst Coventry City and Merthyr Town were relegated to Division Two. The 1921–22 season was the 24th in the history of the Southern League. As in the previous season, the league was split into two sections, one for English clubs and one for Welsh clubs. Plymouth Argyle reserves won the English section, whilst Ebbw Vale won the Welsh section. Plymouth Argyle reserves were declared champions after defeating Ebbw Vale 3-0 in a championship play-off.
