Abercromby Baronets
The Abercromby Baronetcy, of Birkenbog in the County of Banff, was a title in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. It was created on 20 February 1636 for Alexander Abercromby, who subsequently represented Banffshire in the Scottish Parliament. His eldest son, the second baronet, also represented Banffshire in parliament. The fourth baronet was sheriff of Nairnshire and Elginshire. The fifth baronet represented Banffshire in the British Parliament. The seventh baronet was vice-lord-lieutenant of Banffshire and a deputy lieutenant of Aberdeenshire and Banffshire. The eighth baronet was Lord-Lieutenant of Banffshire. The ninth baronet was vice-lord-lieutenant and a deputy lieutenant of Banffshire. The title became extinct on the death of the tenth Baronet in 2003. Baronetage Of Nova Scotia
Baronets are a rank in the British aristocracy. The current Baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier but existing Baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Great Britain. Baronetage of England (1611–1705) King James I created the hereditary Order of Baronets in England on 22 May 1611, for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentlemen of good birth, with a clear estate of £1,000 a year, on condition that each one should pay a sum equivalent to three years' pay to 30 soldiers at 8d per day per man (total – £1,095) into the King's Exchequer. The Baronetage of England comprises all baronetcies created in the Kingdom of England before the Act of Union in 1707. Ralph Abercromby
Lieutenant-general (United Kingdom), Lieutenant General Sir Ralph Abercromby (7 October 173428 March 1801) was a British people, British soldier and politician. He rose to the rank of lieutenant-general in the British Army, was appointed Governor of Trinidad, served as Commander-in-Chief, Ireland, and was noted for his services during the French Revolutionary Wars, ultimately in the French campaign in Egypt and Syria, Egyptian campaign. Sir George Abercromby, 8th Baronet
Sir George William Abercromby of Birkenbog, 8th Baronet DSO (18 March 1886 – 9 September 1964) was a Scottish baronet and landowner, who served as Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire between 1946 and 1964. Background The Abercromby baronets descend from Humphrey Abercromby of Pitmedden (died circa 1457) and the title was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 20 February 1636. Abercromby was born in 1886, the elder son of Sir Robert Abercromby, 7th Baronet and his wife Florence, daughter of Eyre Coote. His father died in 1895 at which time he succeeded to the baronetcy, aged only nine. His mother subsequently married in 1899, Francis Baring, 2nd Earl of Northbrook. Robert John Abercromby, 7th Baronet
Robert John Abercromby (14 June 1850 – 24 July 1895) was the seventh Scottish Abercromby baronet. He held the estates of Birkenbog and Forglen, as well as land in Ireland. He served as Vice- Lord-Lieutenant of Banffshire, and Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of Supply for both Aberdeenshire and Banffshire. Ancestry Abercromby was the son of George Samuel Abercromby (1824–1872) and Agnes Georgina, the daughter of John Cavendish, 3rd Earl of Kilmaine. The couple had three other sons, George Cosmo, Cavendish Douglas and Douglas Charles, and two daughters. Life Abercromby was born in London on 14 June 1850 but spent his formative years at Forglen House in Turriff, Aberdeenshire, after his father succeeded to the family estates in Scotland and Ireland in the year 1855. Sir Robert Abercromby, 5th Baronet
Sir Robert Abercromby, 5th Baronet of Birkenbog and Forglen, FRSE KGCB DL (4 February 1784 – 6 July 1855) was a Scottish politician. Life He was the son of Sir George Abercromby, 4th Baronet, and Jane Ogilvie, the daughter of Alexander Ogilvie, 7th Lord Banff. He succeeded to the titles on the death of his father in 1831.Reitwiesner Among the properties he inherited were the main family seat, which was Forglen House in Turriff, Aberdeenshire. From 1812 to 1818 he was the Member of Parliament for Banffshire. During the first quarter of the 19th century, Abercromby purchased most of the town and lands of Fermoy in Ireland from fellow Scotsman John Anderson. Sir James Abercromby, 2nd Baronet
Sir James Abercromby of Birkenbog, 2nd Baronet (c. 1670 – 20 September 1734) was a Scottish baronet and politician. He was the oldest son of Sir Alexander Abercromby, 1st Baronet and his third wife Elizabeth Baird, daughter of Sir James Baird. Abercromby succeeded his father as baronet in 1684. He entered the Parliament of Scotland in 1693, sitting as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Banffshire until 1702. Abercromby had a library of some importance, and books with his engraved bookplate can still be found in libraries today. Abercromby married Mary Gordon, daughter of Arthur Gordon. They had fifteen children, ten sons and five daughters. Abercromby was succeeded in the baronetcy by his third and oldest surviving son Robert. Alexander Abercromby, Lord Abercromby of Tullibody (1745–1795) was a Scottish advocate, judge and essayist. Life Abercromby was born in Tullibody House in Clackmannanshire on 15 October 1745, the fourth and youngest son of George Abercromby of Tullibody (1705-1800) and Mary Dundas. Two of his brothers entered the army; one of them became general Sir Ralph Abercromby. Alexander was the brother-in-law of Robert Bruce, Lord Kennet and James Edmonstone. Alexander studied law at the University of Edinburgh, where he seems to have been chiefly distinguished for his handsome person and engaging disposition. He was admitted a member of the Faculty of Advocates in 1766, and was soon afterwards (1770) appointed sheriff-depute of Clackmannanshire. General Sir Robert Abercromby (21 October 17403 November 1827), the youngest brother of Sir Ralph Abercromby, was a general in the army, Governor of Bombay and Commander-in-Chief of the Bombay Army and then Commander-in-Chief, India, the East India Company. He was the son of Prof George Abercromby (1705-1800) of Tullibody House. Military career Abercromby served in the French and Indian War, and was promoted captain in 1761. On 30 Nov. 1775, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the 37th Regiment of Foot. Baron Abercromby
Baron Abercromby of Aboukir was a title in the peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 28 May 1801 for Mary, Lady Abercromby, in honour of her husband, the noted military commander Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby, who won the Battle of Aboukir in 1801 and later died from wounds at the Battle of Alexandria. The latter was the grandson of Alexander Abercromby, member of the Scottish Parliament for Clackmannanshire from 1703 to 1707, younger son of Sir Alexander Abercromby, 1st Baronet, of Birkenbog (see Abercromby baronets). Sir Alexander Abercromby, 1st Baronet
Sir Alexander Abercromby of Birkenbog, 1st Baronet (c. 1603 – December 1684) was a Scottish politician. He was the oldest son of Alexander Abercromby of Birkenbog and his wife Elizabeth Bethune, daughter of David Bethune. On 20 February 1636, he was created a Baronet, of Birkenbog, in the County of Banff. Abercromby entered the Parliament of Scotland in 1640, sitting for Banffshire until the following year. He represented the constituency also in 1643 and after a break of three years, he was returned for it in 1646, a seat he held for the next two years. In 1661, he was again successful for Banffshire until 1663. Abercromby was a Covenanter and in 1645 took part at the Battle of Auldearn under command of John Hurry. He married firstly Jane Urquhart, daughter of Sir Thomas Urquhart, and had by her a son and three daughters. After her death, Abercromby remarried Jane Sutherland.
